Great General Free unit upgrade

I just gave a level warrior with 4 exp a great general to pop it up to 24 exp, I gave the unit all availible great general promotions. ie Faster exp gain, faster move, and 30% withdraw chance. 4 turns later I learned rifling and used the great general ability to turn this unit into a riffleman.

This is were the strange part happened, the unit became a level 1 riffleman and lost the great general and all promotions.

Does anyone know why this might have happened?

Assuming you weren't at war at the time, I'd just reload the save to before he disapeared.
