  • 2nd poll : the best wonders ?

    Hi again,

so here is the second poll for our magazine :

What are the 3 best wonders ?
We include national and world wonders, but not corporations and holy cities.

Please add some words to explain your choice

NOTE : consider it for a standard solo game : 7 players on fractal, normal size and speed, difficulty prince, beginng in 4000 BC.

    Thanks again
    Sebastian

PS : the vote will close wednesday the 5th.

I really have five faves, but in the spirit of your poll, the three must-have wonders I generally go for are:

    Stonehenge for the culture, unless playing a CRE leader;
Statue of Liberty, for the specialists; and
Cristo Redentor for the civics flexibility, unless playing a spirtual leader.

When the IF conditions above prevail, then the best other wonders are the Oracle early for the tech boost and the Eiffel tower later for the happiness. Generally, I go for all five, unless the IF conditions prevail. The lower the game difficulty, the more likely I am to go for lots of others.

Statue of Liberty is expensive for the benefit, though of course this depends on map size.

        1. Cristo Redentor as it is now. If nerfed in a patch, it would probably drop out of the top 3.
        2. Pyramids. Come early and don't get obsolete - the power of early-game Representation or sometimes a Middle-age Police State is not to be underestimated!
        3. Colossus - on a Fractal map it'd qualify, as you can and probably will have many coastal cities.

The fact that you didn't know what it did doesn't make it weaker

Pyramids is very powerful, also very expensive, I like to combine it with a philosophical civ and representation civic, stonehenge great for early culture and cheap GP points, Great Library is great for science boost and GP boost while the 2 free scientists are active.

Great Library, particularly when combined with Pyramids : Reason = +8 GS gpp. The direct science boost doesn't hurt either, it's equal to a settled GS, or 1.5 settled GS's under Rep.
Pyramids, particularly when combined with Great Library. Representation is simply great for the economy and can easily substitute for a lack of religion happiness. It's also mildly useful to be able to run US/Police State before having the pre-req techs.
Cristo Redentor, in it's current overpowered state. Possibly even not overpowered.
                    OR
Pentagon. Sometimes you're pretty much forced into Free Speech and Free Religion, and Pentagon is the only way to mass produce lvl3 troops.

I always play large or huge, epic or marathon. Given that, the statue is very valuable.

I've excluded national wanders despite the OP's request to include them. They're different beasts altogether.

                        1) The Great Library,
                        2) The Oracle,
                        3) The Pyramids.

                          Two wonders that are good-no-matter-what

                          1) Great Library (esp w/ phil leader)
                          2) Pyramids. . the happy/science from rep or military boost from PS is fantastic.
                          3) Cristo Redentor. The ability to pop into US or slavery or nat to rush/draft and pop out to your desirable civic is great.

Two others can crack the top three.
Colossus if the map has lots of coast.
SoL if you have lots of cities on one continent.
And of course The Apostolic palace depends on how the religion is going down, but could crack top 3 in certain situations. .. I have certainly been in games where I'd gladly trade GL for the Palace.

Pyramids: A wonder which never becomes obsolete (until, technically I suppose when you've researched all of the appropriate techs)

Colossus: Especially if you get a financial civ. (triply so with the Dutch).

Statue of Liberty: Specialists can be the name of this game.

                            Honorary Mention: Great Library

Stonehenge - Especially now that it doesn't become obsolete until Astronomy. Pushs my borders out for and keeps the AI from encroaching on me.

Oracle - Free Tech, Use the high cost free tech for trading or to catch up to the AI

Chichen Itza - I'm sure I misspelled it, but the adding 25% defense to my cities which will be routinely attacked by the AI is key to my game.
