  • BtS much slower than Warlords/Vanilla?

A friend of mine, who bought BtS after I told him how awesome it was, found it runs really terribly on his laptop. It's got 2GB RAM, a C2D at 2+ GHz, and I think a GeForce 7800 graphics card (maybe 7600). It should run Civ4 without a problem. The issue is that when he's running iTunes (ugh) in the background while BtS is running the sound is very very choppy. He also found that if he turns off iTunes and just uses the in-game sounds it's still choppy. Any ideas?

ive found it seems to use a lot more video memory at least. with vanilla and warlords i would play tectonic map on huge with 18 civs with no problem. i cant anymore, as it starts running slower and slower as i go and by the time i get to late industrial era(or earlier if i try to zoom out), it crashes with a low video memory warning. and thats even with all graphics on lowest possible(it ran fine all the way to endgame on highest graphics in vanilla/warlords).

this is with a geforce 7900 gs btw, not a low end card and higher than what your friend has.

i am almost positive it is the 3.03 patch/directX changes that are screwing up all sorts of aspects of the game for different people in different ways. For me I am getting some serious Civilopedia crashes for no reason at all in-game. I am afraid to use it anymore for any reason. I also have combat animations turned OFF until that bug is fixed as well.

The AI turns for BtS are defenitely faster then Warlords.
The initiating of the diplomacy screen (when the AI calls for a metting) is very slow though.

After install and all patches in a row, computer becomes slower.

BtS very slow to load, but not to play.

              Best regards,

One thing that is sure is it manages memory differently from before: I very often run civ IV and kill the process brutally (through process explorer or task manager) when modding. The result is that the memory used by the game is retained and not returned to the OS when the game is killed, whereas before BtS this didn't happen.
I suspect the game doesn't free memory, or doesn't let the OS manage its cache, as well as it used to.

Vanilla BtS without the patches is a LOT faster than Warlords/Vanilla Civ4 were.

3.0x broke a LOT of the code I think.

                  Me.

Had a lot of trouble with BTS (probably after patches, I think I patched right after I installed, though there's been at least one patch since then, but I don't remember which version numbers)... at the beginning of each turn it would freeze for awhile.. in the late turn up to almost a minute. Super-annoying. Turned the graphics down to low, and that seems to help, but I had no problems with original Civ4 (never got Warlords), so I thought it was odd that my computer would have so much trouble with BTS when it's really the same game I'd think.

edit: forgot to mention, I also get Civilopedia crashes ever since the most recent patch. Basically whenever clicking on a 'hyperlink'. Clicking on picture buttons does fine, clicking on a link crashes the game.

I'm not running with any patches except for Solver's and I've noticed BtS is slower. There's always a lag whenever any sort of screen pops up. I've also had to turn off my hi-res graphics and anti-aliasing as my scrolling would be fairly choppy with it on. With a GeForce 7950GT, that shouldn't be necessary. At least it wasn't with Warlords. It looks to me that there's some optimization required.

While it should be fast on my computer, it is definitely faster than Warlords. I don't know if that is because I am now running 64 bit Vista though.

I bought a new Gatewy 5474 just for the BTS experience (addiction comes in many hideous forms). I am disappointed in the endgame speed as well as zoom outs take about 15-20 seconds. My new computer has a GEForce8500GT video board, Vista OS, 64 bit Dual Core processor running at 3GHz and 2gig of Ram. The Civ4 journey has been up and down on speed since Vanilla into Warlords with all patches. Now with BTS v3.03 it is at its worst. As someone else said, I used to run huge maps with 18 countries all the way to the end with no problems. Now it starts hyperventilating around the industrial age on a panagea, 9 country, huge map. All I can say is its not the hardware that's slowin it up. Let's hope next patch fixes speed and animation problems (already cited on a different thread).

Diplomatic popup in BtS is noticable slower than in WL/vanilla. It is a lag between the music start and the AI-face appear. To went through all the opponents for any tradings takes longer.

The turn time waits feels slightly shorter, so the overall speed makes no big difference.

Gets a little bit choppy sometimes during the late game. Running 3.03 with 7800 GTX, but can't compare to unpatched BtS since I got it from Steam and it came patched and all.
