Would I be strung up by a mob of angry Civ IV players if I admitted I save before every combat and reload if I lose?

Before we get mad at you, click on the fist in the upper right corner. Then click on settings and take a screenie. Post the screenie here. Depending on what we see, we may string up.

I'm interpreating this is actually losing the unit instead of retreating, so I voted 90-95%. It was actually 90.1%, pretty recently. Since it was an attack against a barb unit and not an actual civs unit I decided to reload and not attack.

Now if this is interpreated as including retreating then 99.9% since I once had it state odds of success 99.9% odds of retreat 0.1% and got a retreat. I then attacked again with another unit in the stack.

100%, on BtS... maybe it was a bug. I always see the >99.9% success rate, so I thought it was wierd that my chances were 100, when it's not supposed to be. Then I lost.

My draw dropped, and I sat confused for about ten seconds, but the lesson was learned.

Otherwise, I've lost at up to 99.4, or somewhere about there.

              Goes digging for historical examples...

              FOUND IT!

Also here's another great example. 3 even odd fights in a row, and the AI only wins ONE (1 !!!) combat round!

Haven't lost at 99%+, but have retreated at such odds. Just hit them again. Have lost at 97% with a tank versus a damaged longbowman defender.

I've lost at 99% and change but the most memorable victory I never should have gotten was my Scout caught in open plains winning against another civ's Axeman with Combat I and Shock. I was laughing for a good solid minute at that one.

I attach a lot less significance to the odds than I used to. I just assume now that I stand a chance of losing a battle no matter how attractive the odds may look. Just the vicissitudes of war.

I remember a thread from a while back where people were posting screen caps of units that had accrued insane numbers of promotions and they claimed they never reloaded after a battle to get them- it really strained my credulity.

I tried creating one of those super units. I never attacked at less than 99% odds, as the unit was used only to mop up seriously injured units. It died in no time. You just have to make too many attacks to get those promotions, and eventually, the unit will lose.

I'm surprised the AI didn't reload after that one.

Agreed, Yesterday I had a fresh super unit (grenadier GG with high withdrawal probability and many other promotions) lose to a damaged cat (1.5 or so strength left) on open terrain on a 99.9 so I don't see how you can get over 100 experience points even mopping up since eventually you'll roll the ole double 0, unless you've got a handful of such units. One of them will make it. I prefer instructors since I've never had one die, but I always like having a couple super units around. I just wished they lasted longer.

Instructors stay around even if the city gets captured, so they are essentially immortal. Super units are immortal only if never used, and therefore only sort of super.

I always lose my great generals. I usually keep him well behind the front line. I never allow him to be attacked in a stack. I only ever attack with very favourable odds, and I of course lose him. That's okay though, cause I only create him so I can build West Point. Nah, it's bloody frustrating actually.

Anyway, I've come to accept that every 10 battles I will lose against incredibly favourable odds, but will win against great odds every 1000 battles. Such is life or Firaxis programming. Whatever.

If you want a unit that's survivable, get it to Drill IV.
