It doesn't work that way, though ... you are better off doing other things than building shrines. Conquering will bring you more rewards than shrines will; if you're having a gold crisis, then use scientist specialists or otherwise improve your territory. You should be able to support a large army at every stage in the game after the ancient era.

If nothing else, conquering itself will support your army...

"Conquering will bering you more rewards than shrines will"

Well, if you whip a Library, then you can usually add 1 scientist per new city. You can pretty much never add 2 scientists. If you have Pyramids or Consitution, that's 6 beakers. That's a big if.

So, 6 beakers vs. the maintenance of a new city. Most new cities will cost 3-9 upkeep, if they don't have a courthouse. If they are on another continent, they'll be 6-18 upkeep, or more.

This is all BtS by the way.

Meanwhile, a shrine will add 1 gold + 1 happiness. That's without any whipping or specialists. Or, if you care, in addition to whipping / specialists. And, most people will have Market / Bank / Wall Street in the shrine city.

I guess I'm not seeing how the "conquering will bring you more rewards than shrines will".

If you never add 2 scientists, you're not playing the style that allows you scientists. Four grassland tiles farmed, without any food bonus, gives you two scientists at size 6. Most cities should have food bonuses...

Don't get me wrong, one shrine can be quite useful in the early game as it gets you income. However, several shrines aren't worth the input required. More cities is always better than a few extra gold pieces.

I didn't say "never", I was talking about newly conquered cites.

What you're saying is that conquered cities will always have 4 grassland farms or improved food bonuses, plus Library in either case, and population to support this and whip the Library as needed.

Conquered cities will generally come with gold to pay for their upkeep for the short term. If you go a'conquering, you should bring a group of workers to quickly food up your conquered cities ... if you aggressively farm, you can grow a city in no time flat.

Well, in my experience, post-BtS, that doesn't work on cross-continent. Pangaea it still applies, to an extent. It of course assumes Slavery, which has new burden or two, with events and extra costs.

I guess I'm saying I think they did a pretty darn good job balancing things in BtS....
