  • Bad error on vanilla =(

I dabble with this game while trying to recover from my WoW habbit =D

unfortunetly this morning i decided to use the ingame search for updates utility off the advanced menu.

So it loaded patch_174 and when it was done installing it installsheild flashed an error at me.

Now the game doesnt start up =( gives me a D3DX9_32.dll cannot be found error.

When i try to uninstall the game i get another error:

    Error Code: -5004 : 0x80041f42
    Error Information:
    *C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\Professional\RunTime\12\00\Int el32\iKernel.dll
    >inc\CoCreate.cpp (44)
    >SetupDLL\SetupDLL.cpp (1390)
    PAPP:Sid Meier's Civilization 4

When i try to reinstall the patch, i get an error.

So i cant seem to play the game, uninstall the game, or install the game in a differnt directory.

    Argh!

The patch requires DX routines that aren't included with the default game. You have to go to Microsoft and update your DX9 package.

The installshield error is odd, you may want to reinstall your installshield. But either way, listen to Willem

That's for Windows XP, if you have vista you need dx 10 (google directx 10, or just go to gamesforwindows.com )

This is probably, as has been discussed, because you need to download the new (June 2007) Directx9.0c update. Search for it, the Microsoft website will have it.

When i try to uninstall the game i get another error:

This error looks identical to ones I get when I try to install certain games on Vista (you are using Vista?). One way to try to resolve it is to deactivate Vista's frustrating User Access Control (UAC), which prompts you to do EVERYthing, and for a while refused to even read a CD I put in the drive.

The second thing to try, which is the only way I can actually install/uninstall some games, is to log in to Vista's secret Administrator account. You can give yourself all the privileges you want, no other login will let you do the same things. At least in Vista Home Premium. Have a search for this online too, but if you still have no luck, I can help find those instructions.

Vista... it's fine for me, but for some amazingly idiotic ideas. What on Earth good to the average consumer (even the dumb one) comes from preventing them from even playing a CD or DVD?!

Back to the ROOTS of addiction. My first missed poll!
