  • XP cap?

OKay, here's a slight issue I'm having. My units seem to "cap out" at 10 XP.

I've recently started a new game and have been working on the Unstoppable War Machine. Which, unfortunately, now consists of only Knights and Macemen, but I digress.

However, I've experienced a snag. The thing is, my units hit 10 XP fairly quickly (I keep a couple of barbarian cities around primarily for training purposes), but once they hit 10, they stop progressing entirely. No matter how many battles they fight or cities they take, inside or outside of my cultural borders, they never advance beyond 10 XP.

Which, unfortunately, means I can't seem to acquire the Heroic Epic or the West Point National Wonders. Which I'd really like to have, for obvious reasons.

Now, I admit, I am currently unaware of whether the cities I built some of these guys in have Barracks and Stables or not, but even with those that's only a +5 XP bonus (+3 from Barracks, +2 from Stables...), which still won't get me to 17.

Is this a cap based on fighting Barbarians, or is it a cap because I neglected Barracks/Stables, or is it a bug, or what? I've run several searches on the subject, here and elsewhere, and this doesn'y seem to be a problem anyone else is having, and none of the availabe FAQs so much as mention anything of the sort. The only expanation anything anywhere seems to give (And this includes the Civlopedia!) on teh subject is that you get experience from combat. Except that, um, well, I don't seem to be.

    Any thoughts?

You can't get higher than 10 XP from barbs or 5 XP from animals.

Yeah, I've had units (usually Great Generals) with about 120+ XP points before. Others have gone higher I am sure.

Limit is related only to barbs.

In addition, if your units should start with more than 10 XP (having stables, barracks, West Point, Military Instructors, Aggressive trait, etc), they won't get any exp from the barbs at all.

Also, when you upgrade them, any XP gets knocked back to 10.

They won't lose promotions though, will they?

No, they keep those. You just have to rebuild their experience if you want them to progress further.

Yes, what you end up with is, for example, a Cavalry (which you promoted from a Knight, maybe) which has 10 XP and needs 37 to progress to the next level. (Normally you get the next level at 17, but you already got that promotion.)

BTW, Warlord units get to keep all XP when promoted, plus they promote for free (zero cash).
