  • Trade Route Odditie/Question

    Hello,

See the screenshot attached, anyone got any idea why Guimaraes actually gimme more money than trade with York ?

Also, I find the calculation pretty disturbing...

50%+5%+25%+100%+150% makes 330%, so it should be 4.3
    50%+5%+25%+150% makes 230%, so should be 3.3

Bug, or game mechanic misunderstood ?

Also, if anyone knows what are the other factors that can affect trade routes (I had no clue about the 5% from population, and dont know exactly what it means...), all info would be welcome.

True enough, I forgot about that.

Yet, why is no one caring about getting 25% of your trade disappearing ?

I know trade is all automated so it doesn't make a difference, but still, I like to understand why...

The option to see what composes trade by mousing over the coin is new. I have not seen anything about how it is actually determined. My understanding in the past for Civ IV was that distance and overseas were the two factors that mattered most. I don't see the distance portion of the calculation on your screenshot. Only the coder or one of the testers can tell you why the relative results appear reversed in size and are larger than the math justifies.

What country are you playing as?

Does the city in the screen shot have a harbour?

My understanding is that a harbour in the originating city should not affect the value of the trade route, which seems to be contrary to your screen shot. I suspect that whatever the mouse over is showing, it is not how the trade values were calculated.

rjm: yes it is, the numbers confirm it. What the OP is seeing is just the fact that you can only get an integer number of commerce - if you have more, the fractional part is discarded.

Trade routes also, iirc, have some under-the-hood stuff that isn't shown (still). I'm not sure, though, what that is (or if i'm even right about that any more). Also, I think not all of those bonuses are directly additive (some may be applied after others, and thus multiply).

Note that the city with the higher % modifier actually has a lower end result. That's truly odd.

Harbor both increases the "trade route value" of the city and the actual value of the trade route, so that is correct, by the way.

I've looked at these several times, and in each case the commerce from the route has been exactly equal to 1 + %/100, discarding the fractional part.

I'm assuming you're England? If so then foreign trade routes are worth more than local ones.

The factors shown in the screen shot are the same except that York has +100% for overseas trade and Guimaraes does not. Surely York should have a higher trade value than Guimaraes. I don't see how rounding can explain the differences.

Er, I have them backwards. Guim-whatever ought to have only 3 commerce...

No, not playing with England - nor Portuguese, its all foreign trade routes, but England is on a different continent.

Rounding up gives 4 and 5, so the only explanation I can come up with is that they are switched.

Ill keep an eye on those for further games.

The game rounds down, not up.
