  • hooking up resource (bug)

I began hooking up cows first in my city. They were on the river so I figured didn't need a road. The pasture was finished well before BC3240 but I did not see any cows in the city screen and did not recieve the "congratulations you've hook up cows" message either. I started wondering, and took this screenshot to document.

In BC2880 I still see no cows in the city screen and I hover over the tile to see what gives (see lower left corner). It does not say that it needs a route so I figure it should be ok and decide to wait.

Finally in BC2520 on the turn when I finish the road to hook up the *horses* to the East then I receive message that cows (and horses) are hooked up and they show up in the city screen as well.

Am I completely daft or is this a bug?

(I did not suffer from this since I did not need the health benefit this early on, but it makes me wonder about the integrity of the code...)

Cities dont count as being "on the river" when site diagonally to the source. So it is only when you build the route southeast of the city that it connected the river and the route to your city through this SE sqaure.

Also, note that rivers dont automatically connect in BtS before you discover sailing. And anyways, building a road to the cow sqaure is always a good option to be able to send your troop sincity to defend two squares away of their base when Barbs come and threaten your goodies (Unless you really want to save a few turns to connect another ressource for whatever reason).

Additionally, I tend to prefer to put cottage on Flood Plains, as they are sqaures that will almost always be worked and they will therefore have a steady growth - besides, especially in this case, do you care of a mere +1 food when you got cows right there ?

Thanks! So it turns out I was daft after all...

Good point about the cottages. I think I always tend to emphasize rapid growth over getting a few cottages up early, but that gets me to neglect my economy a bit too long (although I am usually 'saved' by getting cash for some wonder I could not complete first).

I tend to do the opposite. For me the 4/0/1 square beats the 3/0/2+ square and particularly in the early part of the game where commerce is not as important as food/hammers. The extra food saves turns while the initial settlers are being

After that I will tend to look towards Renaissance/Industrial era improvements and decide if I will want a watermill on that tile. Tiles by rivers that will not have watermills will be cottaged while the rest are farmed.

        Exceptions:
Sometimes in the capital, the gains from commerce tiles running bureaucracy are too good to pass up. If farms are not needed for growth then cottages will be preferred. Also, if I appoint a city for commerce then it will be heavily cottaged.

Not daft. That link road from the city to the river is just misleading. It is also, by chance that the horse-city link road also links to the river and so provides the link to the cows.

Rivers don't work as a connection until you have the Sailing technology, which also hooks up coastal connections. This is new to BtS.

Not quite. To my understanding they still connect resources within your borders instead of roads as per the above example. I would say that what you describe applies to trade with other civs via rivers instead of via roads or border contact.

Cities won't link to the capitol without a road even if they are on the same river without that tech. I believe the same is true for resources, but don't have a save game to show that. The BtS Concepts segment of the Civilopedia specifically calls out the "no trading on rivers without _____." I believe that blank is the Sailing tech.
