  • "Civilization Daydreams" Launch and Schedule

Are you dreaming about Civilization tonight? Yes or no, several popular web comic creators in the gaming community have been brought together to create and showcase comics and animated shorts that demonstrate how intently they're thinking about the strategy game series at any and and every hour of the day. Apolyton Civilization Site (ACS) is proud to partner with CivIV: Beyond the Sword publisher 2K Games to help deliver and display these original works in "Sid Meier's Civilization Daydreams".

The artists behind the comics 8-Bit Theater, Control-Alt-Delete, Dueling Analogs, GUComics, MyExtraLife and PvPOnline and those who drive the Over the Hedge comic and animated film all have one or more content pieces that will be released between July 25th and August 10th of this year. In them, they provide an opportunity to hear what the units and characters inside CivIV would say and do if life in the game was real. They know that as the Civ player you are controlling their destinies, but if you believe for a moment they have no opinion on the decisions you make and strategies you employ think again.

This promotion's launch comic by GUComics' Woody Hearn is available for viewing and commenting. The full comic and short release schedule including the online destination for them is also available for consultation. Fellow Civ fansites Civilization Fanatics Center and Planet Civilization join ACS in publishing these efforts as well as the creators themselves on their comics' official sites.

Like what you see? Convinced you can do just as well or even better? 2KG and CivIV developer Firaxis Games want to 'see all about it' in a fan art and comics contest with submissions that offer insight into the Civ universe, are creative and of good drawing quality. A number of Xbox 360 controllers, gaming receives and Sound Blaster sound cards make up the available prize package. Open to United States residents only, you have until August 24th to submit your entry for judging by a panel of Firaxis employees and beta testing participants.

Will they all be posted here?

I don't know why he saved my life. Maybe in those last moments he loved life more than he ever had before. Not just his life - anybody's life, my life. All he'd wanted were the same answers the rest of us want. Where did I come from? Where am I going? How long have I got? All I could do was sit there and watch him die.

Woody Hearn helped kick off the "Civilization Daydreams" promotion on the release of Civilization IV: Beyond the Sword [see related stories], and last Thursday began a three-party storyline on the official website for his comic -- GUComics -- that follows Tokugawa of the Japanese and his struggle against Genghis Khan and the Mongols.

The final two parts will be published in succession on August 2nd and 3rd.

Today and seven days from now, Steve Napierski of Dueling Analogs fame is releasing a Civilization IV: Beyond the Sword-centric comic as part of the ongoing "Civilization Daydreams" promotion [see related stories]. The first of these is available and pokes fun alongside a classic Civ series joke.

Napierski's contributions to this effort don't stop there. His "Two Workers Chatting" comic will appear exclusively here on Apolyton Civilization Site on August 8th.

The first Civilization fansite to feature an exclusive comic as part of the "Civilization Daydreams" promotion is Planet Civilization. From Ctrl+Alt+Del's Tim Buckley comes "Beyond the Sword Indeed" which follows a brief conversation between two soldiers from two different eras before an inevitable end for one.

"Daydreams" is offering a series of original content from web comic cartoonists and animators celebrating the release of the CivIV expansion Beyond the Sword, the most extensive addition to come to any Civ title to date [see related stories].

Welcome. I just posted about the two others available as of now as well.

The second Ctrl+Alt+Del comic for today has not been posted quite yet, and as near as can be seen PVP's Scott Kurtz missed the publish dates of both of his comics.

In addition to Apolyton Civilization Site [see story], fellow Civ fansite Civilization Fanatics Center is featuring an exclusive animated short by RingTales' Mike Fry and Jim Cox. Entitled "Gaius Julius Caesar", it's available in a high-resolution and low-resolution format and is 46s in length.

This effort is part of the "Civilization Daydreams" promotion, offering a series of original content from web comic cartoonists and animators celebrating the release of the CivIV expansion Beyond the Sword, the most extensive addition to come to any Civ title to date [see related stories].

Imaginations continue to soar with the ongoing "Civilization Daydreams" promotion, celebrating the release of the CivIV expansion Beyond the Sword [see related stories]. Though nearing a week late (see release schedule), PVP's Scott Kurtz published the first of two comics set in the BtS universe. In the untitled work, the Amish are preparing for an invasion against a technologically superior enemy.

Thanks to Apolyton Civilization Site community member "Jhereg" for the note on this content's availability at last. It is unknown when the second comic, scheduled for release on July 26th, will materialize.

It's late though not as much as another [see story]. Ctrl+Alt+Del creator Tim Buckley has released his second "Civilization Daydreams" (CD) comic entitled "Deal or No Deal". In it, Rome's Julius Caesar is haggling with America's Abraham Lincoln for access to one very yellow fruit.

This is Buckley's third and final "CD" comic. The first, "Deal or No Deal", is available for viewing underneath this third one and examines one Great Pyramid and another that was not to be. His second was exclusively released by Civ fansite Planet Civilization earlier this week [see story].

The "CD" effort is offering a series of original content from web comic cartoonists and animators celebrating the release of the CivIV expansion Beyond the Sword, the most extensive addition to come to any Civ title to date [see related stories].

Today will see the first and tomorrow the second "Civilization Daydreams" promotion comic [see related stories] by 8-bit Theatre creator Brian Clevinger (see release schedule). In the first, a student takes his Civing experience a little too far in the classroom.

I had fond memories of playing Civilization way back in the day, Clevinger comments as to why he agreed to participate when approached by BtS publisher 2K Games "Playing" is perhaps giving me too much credit. A more accurate term would be "losing creatively." But whatever.

Those looking for Clevinger's second contribution to this effort won't have to wait very long. Clevinger is to post it sometime tomorrow.
