That's part of your problem right there. According to the manual, Environmentalism increases the maintenance of Corporations by 25%. To get the most benefit from them, you need run Free Market which reduces the maintenance by 25%.

Maps - I've never liked pangaea maps so the Big and small with a nice mixture of continents and large islands is really nice.

Yes, I'm really enjoying the Big & Small maps too. I used to like playing Fractal because they were more varied than the others, but they usually ended up being more of a Pangea map. With Big & Small, I get a nice variety. Though it seems to me that the civs tend to start closer together on those maps.
