    Dale,

I am currently testing memory for my 300x120 worldmap. I have most of the terrain done for North America. With 18 civs no Barb cities yet. I using about 700 MB.

I loaded your 1939 mod. I'm using around 422mb. How soon will it take to reach mem limit?

I am running XP w/3GB RAM. I'm trying to figure out if moving to a GeForce 8500 or 8600 w/512MB will help performance much.

      Well written programs don't.

Yeah well, how many of those are there actually out there? Memory Leaks, in varying degrees, are a fairly common issue in many programs. There's always something that doesn't get flushed out of RAM on a regular basis causing it to fill up. I imagine it can be very difficult to detect every minor instance of a memory leak or failure to clear RAM of data.

Most programs do not have memory leaks and nor should they. I don't understand why people are trying to defend obvious poor programming in BtS.

Because it isn't obvious. The game works fine for fairly long periods of time for me, on 1GB of RAM.

How do you know the result is poor programming by Firaxis, btw? It's very easy to scream "memory leak" without any idea of what is actually occurring.

I had this problem on Warlords. I have 1.5 gigs of Ram and my page file is set up so that it is system managed with 3 gigs allocated between my two hard drives. Still, if I play the game for several hours consuming more than 1 gig of Ram, it will get this error.

I usually don't get this kind of error in Excel when I run Monte Carlo simulations and those are just as memory intensive. It would be nice for some kind of fix, but I'm not expecting one.

BtS (and Civ4, and Warlords) takes a huge amount of ram, and takes more the longer you play it. That's because it holds an incredible amount of information in RAM, and tries to hold onto as much as possible to keep things running smoothly. It takes far more RAM than most FPSs or even RTSs because of this.

Playing on a huge map with a lot of civs is pretty much asking for trouble
