  • Comments re Random events and the realised or potential advantage/disadvantage

I am currently playing quick, small, Sumerian. In about 3 -5 turns after the research window for hunting/archery (which I did not research as I have protective and did not need a barracks early and hoped a late archer with promos would be ok) I got an event advising all melee troops would get cover as a basic promotion. Leads to the question of not researcing tech on the hope that you get an event by researching other defensive techs. Does this change your research pattern on a protective Civ. I have been trying to get a workable Protective Civ up and running since most reviews from Warlords have them at the bootom of the trait list.

    Thoughts anyone?

Also found that on marathon starts, don't build near a mountain, most likely a volcano.

So the odds of a mountain turning into one is the same regardless of game speed?

This is kind of like finding new resources in 2-4 mines during a marathon game because the game takes so long then (I don't think I've ever found anything on normal sped).

Seemed to be faster than goodie mine pop, however I also noted more ggodie mine pops so it may be relative to the observer. New found respect for mountains. Wiped out a piggy farm three times plus extra tiles in later eruptions (unless the spies booby-trapped a volcano) and in another spot a six coin town, built super early and relied upon for upkeep. Ouch.

Has anyone on an early build got the Maori Statutues? I've got to 1200 AD and still available!

It's not a national wonder, is it?

It is and that is why I haven't built it. Early cities vs National Wonders 2X limit, not enough cities. It comes early, but is it best left to be a late National Wonder or is it again the 'pure maths' that wins.

Well if you build coastal cities, it's a great thing to build, it lets you have a steady city that has good food and commerce and also decent production!

So is it it a must have build asap, or can you delay until the ocean city with 9+ tiles. How many NW by the way? 10 or so?

It certainly does sound like a great wonder for those isthmus cities. Up until now, they've been terrible production-wise.

Try playing the Dutch (financial). Their special building is the Dike, which adds a hammer to every water square. Couple that with the Statues, lighthouse, and Colossus and you get a wicked isthmus going on.

                    3 bread per water square
                    4 coins per water square
                    2 hammers per water square
