  • How to Demo "BtS"' Charlemagne Scenario

The latest issue of PC Gamer magazine, September 2007, contains 100-turn demo of the Charlemagne scenario found in the upcoming Civilization IV expansion pack Beyond the Sword. As of this writing eight screenshots can be found in the related thread on fellow Civ fansite Civilization Fanatics Center`s forums.

In the scenario, players assume the role of one of the major or select minor civilizations during the period of the Holy Roman Empire.

This just arrived in the mail for me today which was pretty cool.

It doesn't seem like there's a whole lot of new stuff to show off in there, though, but it did keep me entertained for an hour.

The advanced start is neat. It basically starts you out in the world builder with a limited amount of gold and lets you drop down cities, units, and improvements, and then add culture, buildings, and population to the cities. You can also buy more techs and reveal unexplored squares of territory.

If you get on the Pope's good side it didn't seem too difficult since he will then periodically give you Papal Pikemen which can tear through other civs pretty handily. Getting on his good side isn't tough either since he'll love you if you just go to war against the Arabs with him.

Aside from Charlemagne and Justinian (Byzantines) all the civs have paintings for leaderheads:

Digging around the assets that installed with the game, there's a few other interesting things:

What looks to be a Teddy Roosevelt leaderhead
Corporation icons that are the actual logos of real-life companies:
