You should get a percentage of vassals income. Right now you get higher maintenance costs but they don't pay any tribute to you. That's... a bit strange.

You've obviously never exploited them for their resources.

But a vassal (specially one you have good relations with) should not be exploited. They should pay you tribute willingly.

I've found AI bonuses on higher levels plus directing a vassals research to be a pretty gigantic benefit if done properly. I wish the beaker trade required for a tech to be accessable was more friendly to the player in a vassal relationship though.

Well, they're your vassal. They either lost to your army (so they should be paying you something), or they willingly are asking for your protection (even when they aren't at war with someone). This costs you money, so if anything, take their resources for your troubles, and then sell them back to them, so they can be worth the cost. They will stay happy, will continue to have their resources, and you won't be paying for their vassalage, they'll be willingly paying for your protection.

Well, that's the way I see it, anyway...

              LoL, a good idea actually.

Well, I recently found out more AI abuse of vassal status. In a recent game of mine I was fighting Mehmed, it was a rather long war and at the end I had him more or less begging for peace. The end result of the peace treaty included 135 gold/turn. Well, the turn after I made the treaty Mehmed vassalized to another civ instantly canceling my peace treaty with him while it still had 9 turns to go.

Now that's a legitimate AI abuse. Perhaps a bug even?
