Why? Frigates can't carry units, nor can they enter closed-border waters without declaring war.

Sometimes you want to sneak a spy across the ocean, and maybe your production queues are occupied with other things, and you just happen to have a caravel come home after a long sea voyage. Presto! Upgrado! You've got a sub.

All true, just irrelevant to the question asked.

The OP mentions wanting to upgrade caravels, but doesn't specify to what.

I've discovered that you can upgrade a Caravel to Frigate with a unit already boarded.

Of course, you still can't move that Frigate across hostile borders, but if you want to move an Explorer across a hostile sea, Frigates are much more durable than Caravels

If Carracks can carry real units (especially if they can carry 2 or 3), that could be a very minor exploit - build Carracks (you can always build your UU, IIRC), upgrade to frigates or subs, and you suddenly have a much more durable (or hidden) transport.

I would swear I've done that before by accident, and the game deleted the transported unit (missionary).

Put it ashore in some very strange place is more likely.

And no, you cannot always construct your UU. :frown:

I had no idea the WSJ was so politically influenced.

"By my rough count, the hold contains about 150 bombs -- and there are no fewer than 36 other such holds on the ship. I find myself entertaining the idea of offering the same tour to Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. It would serve him well as a lesson in humility."

"No doubt the Chinese will one day figure out the mechanics of landing planes at sea -- and of catapulting them off the deck. I wonder if they'll ever get the human element right."

eh. All papers are political these days.

I just thought it was interesting they used the same title for the article that I used for this thread and nine days later ... coincidence? I think not.

Must be a WSJ writer reading these pages!
