  • Starting Build/Civic Tech suggestions for noob

Hey everyone, I am glad to be on these forums they are so active! Anyways I am a BRAND spankin new civilization player and everyone knows that this game is one complicated mama! I played games like warcraft 3 FT where speed is the essence . I was wondering what I should be going for if I wanted to go for a military victory in my game. I usually either start out with the persian for immortals(if i get lucky with horse) or mongols or japanese. I am just having a hell of a time and I am finding myself restarting my game due to lack of strength compared to other nations....I am starting to get the hang of the game but there are a few complicated features that I need to know.

Thanks for all the help you can provide this noob!

ps I read through the forums looking for help, but I just need some direct answers! Thanks a lot!

and if anyone could post a replay of one of their games( ANY KIND OF REPLAY DOES NOT HAVE TO BE A MILITARY VICTORY) it would be great just so I can see what I should be doing

If you need direct answers you should ask more direct questions

It's impossible to say how you should start a game, as it all depends on how your start position looks like and what settings you have chosen for the game
This space is empty... or is it?

This, along with the leader/civ you pick could lead to wildly different early (middle and late) game stratages. One of the reasons I love this game... there is no "one best stratagy".

There ARE however MANY rules of thumb that every good player should know regardless of their stratagy. Too many to list here, but the resorces below point out most if not all of them.

In addition to Vel's thread, check out Apolyton University.

You also might want to lower your difficulty level, then work your way up. Learn alot just by playing.

And try starting with Rome, their UU kicks butt, their kind of the noob civ for warmongers. A few tips: make sure one of your early cities has some serious hammer potential so that you can build lots of military units and devote it to that after you build a barracks. Don't worry about building too many cities (4 or 5), just take the rest from your opponents. Don't get into more than one war at a time if you can avoid it. Don't worry about building wonders, capture them from your enemies.

            Oh, and have fun.

Rome is one of the best warmonger civ's for the new (and not so new) player.

                Praetorians rock!

To be an effective warmonger you will need at least one good "hammer" city - a city that has lots of hills etc around it that you can mine - so to work these hills you also need some good food too.......

Do try playing on a lower level maybe to start off with as well.

It is difficult to just give general advice - so maybe post some screenshots of the game you are playing - particulalrly ones of where you are planning to build your cities - I am sure you will get heaps of advice.

All he'd wanted were the same answers the rest of us want. Where did I come from? Where am I going? How long have I got? All I could do was sit there and watch him die.

On lower difficulty levels, Bizmarck (Germany) is probably the best for newbies looking for a peaceful/spaceship victory.

There is a bunch of strategy information at this site and at CivFanatics.com. Do check them out.
