  • noob question about unit activation

okay my last noble game was such a lopsided victory on my part, it's time to move up to prince. wish me luck. I haven't played in a few months, but played a couple games the last couple days. And I haven't lost my touch. In fact, I seem to be doing even better than I used to.

noob question though. I need something to save time, how do I activate all the units in one square to say go to sleep, or wake up? I know you can group units, although I found out the other day when you group all it will even include workers in that group. . Say I move a large stack of tanks to a pre war staging point. I want to put them all to sleep at once (though not necessarily every tank in the game with the alt key), how do I do that?

and I welcome any advice about prince level as well.

Its either ctrl or alt that will let you select all units of the same type in the same square.

Check the message in the bottom left of the screen.

If there are mixed units involved then you can always group all of them and give them the “group” command. Once you’ve done this then click on the group again and you’ll see all the units shown at the bottom of the screen. Select one of these any you can give it a command which will “de-select” it from the group. Continue until the “group” is left with the units you want.

An alternative, which may lose time is to get the units that you want in the group in the same square away from other units. Group them and then move them as you wish.

I use shift and left click, which lets me select any unit from the stack and also gives "sleep all" and "wake all" options.

Advice on prince level: build lots of military. I usually try to make my second city a military pump.

Ctrl-click for units of same type, Alt for all units in tile. I use them both often.

Simple. If you already have the Tanks stacked, just hit your S key. Once stacked, all units within it act as if they were all one single unit.

You can also double click a stack of units to select them all, though it doesn't work for units in cities.

k I'll try some of these methods. we'll see how they work. thanks

as for my prince game, it's going okay I think. I had a bad starting position, my capitol is decent, but lack any other good city sites.

I was like 9 or 10 techs behind most of the game. I think I closed it to 5. I think I neglected my military too much after I took over one roman city (and levelled another). my maintenance costs were too high to take over more.

after the axeman rush (I had no iron), I neglected my military until military tradition. I'm about 10 turns away from military tradition now, but 2 civs just declared war on me (one may be a vassal of another). Luckily both are overseas. I see one galleon and frigate near my capitol, and most of my forces are on the east side of my empire adjacent to roman lands. I do have 2 bowmen and 1 maceman I can use to defend my capitol. I think galleons hold 3 units, so I think that will be enough. For some reason the AI loves to attack just before you learn military tradition. It's like this nearly every game.

My plan was to do a cavalry rush soon as I got mt and take over every roman city. I'm last in score, but I'm hoping the addition of their cities would help. The only victory options enabled are conquest, time, and domination. but who knows how long it will take to make peace with my attackers. I can't force them into peace by taking their cities (I have almost no navy except for a few tiremes). I may have to sue for peace, this will delay hitting rome. I want to do it before I see rifleman.

I think the price for peace is calculated according to the ratio of killed/lost units against a civilization.
So, as long as you kill more (worth) of their units than you lose of your own (i.e. the AI is 'losing' the war against you), you should be able to not have to pay for peace (after 20 turns or so).
Capturing cities is just a bonus (if at all).

I have seen mentioned ctrl-left-click to select all units of a same type in the unit list display for a plat. What I have not seen mentioned is shift-ctrl-left-click to add all of a second type of unit. You can build a travelling stack of doom rather quickly that way. You can also empty out a city of a certain type of unit that you didn't mean to if you are not careful. I am not always careful.
                    If you aren't confused,
                    You don't understand.

does anyone know what the little white star means above the city population number on the main screen?

White star means either forbidden city or versallais (sp?) is built there.
