    I can use the binoculars icon to 'fortify' a unit and have it activate if an enemy unit passes an adjacent square.

    1- But can I extend this function to apply to the unit's visual range? That seems both more useful and more reasonable.

    2- Similarly, without using the "show friendly moves" in the game settings (which makes the camera run back and forth for ages at the beginning of every turn) can I make the binoculars icon wake up units when friends pass by?

    1- Regretably NO, though I also would surely appreciate it.
    2- No, again. Sentry (the binoculars/eyeglass/telescope icon) only wakes the unit up when a hostile moves adjacent.

    OTOH, with "show enemy moves" you will get an announcement that you can check in the alert log (ctrl-tab), and clicking on the alert in question will center the map on the location.
