Cossacks were probably given their orriginal strengths because Firaxis didn't realize how early you could Cavalry. Now that BTS is delaying Cavalry, which gives a nerf to both Cavalry and Cossacks. So would Cossacks still be balanced if they were given their original strengths back?

    I say yes.

BtS isn't delaying Cavalry until Assembly Line, though.

Cossacks at their original strength would have the same problem as they did - they'd be able to beat any contemporary unit, including their direct counter, Riflemen, as long as you promote with Pinch.

What about Praetorians? Even if they were nerfed to 7, they'd still be powerful enough. An 8 and everyone knows they'll win most battles. That's why many players only play Romans.

Yeah, you got to have a civ for the newbies, Romans fit the role really well

Cossacks shouldn't and won't be un-nerfed IMO. If anything gets changed it will be the new units (and Praets, if there is a god!).

I'm going to vote no on increasing Cossacks strength back up to old level. All Calvary type units were too powerful in the old timeline, in large part because that position was much more approative for something like Civ II dragoon units.

In the new timeframe, the Calvary type units are where they belong and I'm sure the bonsus they'll give Cossacks suffice.

they're strong but definitely not grossly overpowered. i think immortals are a whole lot nastier.

But can easily be countered by spears. Perhaps one should give Preatorians a -25% against axemen?

I prefer to think of the UU as a nice extra to the game rather than something that fundamentally changes the game. Those like skirmishers, impis, musketeers, Cho-ki-nu add a nice new dimension, allowing you adopt slightly different tactics.

The minute that you get a steam-roller unit (ie Praets and vanilla-Cossacks), the game breaks down and loses its variety.

yeah that's what they were trying to avoid that they had in civ3, though I kind of liked steam roller units.

but I see the importance of doing it this way.
