Please excuse the noob question but

"Why can I only use my spies once"?

It seems that I can only create 4 spies and then only one of them can be used to sabotage once per round.

Is this a bug or am I doing something wrong?

    I am running patch 1.61

    Thanx

Depending on the assignment, spies can be used mulitple times unless they are caught.

And once you lose a spy, you can then build another one to replace it.

It is not a bug... it's for game balance. In older versions of Civ, some thought the Spy was too powerful. What you see in Civ IV is a totally nerfed spy.

Personally, I think they went too far.
    Keep on Civin'

WOW !! Thanx for the super fast reply.

I was really looking forward to using the spies and decimating my opponents. Now they just sit around in enemy terriotry looking bored.

Ah well, I'll see what the expansion has to offer.

        Thanks again.

          Play out an espionage thriller!

I think it'd be amusing if spies could cause a GP assigned to a city to defect (for the right price, of course - more for an outright snatch). Then the spy would have to escort the GP out of the country - overland, or perhaps to a waiting caravel/sub (other transport if at war). The GP would be hidden while stacked with the spy, but they could be discovered. The former owner would get various messages depending on the "success" of the defection/snatch - from "A GP has defected/been snatched" to "(GP name) has defected/been snatched from (city)."

          Can spies assassinate warlords?

it might not apply to your case, but it took me some time realising that the sabotages spies carry out cost money... I could not do anything with them at first but once my coffers filled up the sabotage option bacame available and I could use several spies the same turn to sabotage aluminium and copper mines in my spaceship comptetitor's territory...

I'm hoping that spies will become more useful and hopefully available at a more timely age, such as the Renaissance.

At that time, a spy might actually be more useful (not to mention easier to slip into someone's city, and their treason all the more interesting. And again, the limit to only having 4 active at one time is a little ridiculous, considering how prevalent agents have been in the past, we really need many more so that we can monitor our enemies by something other than the temple piplines...
