  • New Civ and saved games

I recently modified my XML to add a new civ. It worked pretty much as I wanted it to so I was happy.

    But ...

I have now looked at one of my old games and my newly created leader appears in a game that I played long before I modified the XML. The only explanation I can think of is that the saved game keeps a note of leaders by their position on a list and that by creating a new leader, I have changed this list, and the saved game is retrieving the wrong leader.

Anyone know whether this is the case?

I'm not absolutely sure that it's the case in your specific situation but yes the order in which entries come in the XML files do matter in general. Is your new civ the last entry in the XML files? If not try moving it to there and reload your old game.

My new leader is very early in the XML - I based it on Alexander, (who is number 2) and I simply pasted it in as a (new) number 3. Thanks for the tip about moving my new leader to the end of the list - good catch!

I hadn't realised the result of having new leaders in the XML. It meant that in any saved game I picked up from these forums I could potentially have the wrong traits for my leader and my opponents could be different. I've now moved my leader to the end of the list.

However, it does seem possible to exploit this "feature" for example by replaying a start with a different combination of traits, etc for comparison.
