Ah, must mean I'm not having the problem then. Civ4 turn-times are good, and Oblivion runs very smoothly.

If you live where they don't speak English so much then Dell thinks they can foist Vista on you! Well, maybe.

I can get XP separately for cheapish anyway, by the sound of it, so I guess this issue is one one of those where one has to test with a particular setup to see if Visita improves or worsens performance.

Still, this sounds like a step back from XP, doesn't it? I'm sure XP had problems soon after launch time as well, but were they as inconsistent as Vista's, where it seems to be uncertain even whether you will get a performance hike or hit?

Yeah, in my playing around with Vista, Civ4 seems to work absolutely fine with it...

Rechecked. I just went through the US site, and although I see a helluva lot of options not on Dell.ch, I don't see any option but Vista and Vista upgrade etc, even once I've finished choosing and select 'edit' for the OS. Where is that option?

They might have changed the options available, then.

I remember being able to choose between Windows XP, Windows 2000, and one or two others if my memory serves me right.

            but anyway . . . . .

I have Vista installed, and the only difference is that I had to turn of AA to get the game running smoothly
This space is empty... or is it?

What is that? Does Vista have Anti Aliasing?

I've seen the Vista tech specs, if your computer can still run with (Vista on in the high graphic mode) normal desktop apps, it won't have problems with Civ IV.

On the lack of duel-core software support, that's normal for most programs out there. If your runnning one heavy app that's more intense than the rest of the processes combined, Visa will naturally dedicate one processor to your heavy app and have everything else share the other processor. (In fact having a duel-core processor is the only reason I can think of for upgrading an existing computer from XP to Visa.)

I have Vista basic with a dual core processor, and I can't get Civ IV to run. Civ III is peachy, but even with the v 1.61 patch, Civ IV is not operating. Do I have to upgrade? Can anyone tell me what I have to adjust in order to get Civ IV running on Windows Vista Basic? It's not a matter of graphics or processor, I've all the hardware requirements.

What happens when you try to run it, precisely?

Like others have said, the game works fine with Vista.
I would strongly recommend 2GB of Ram though.

Also the game benefits disproportionality from Dual Core - it benefits more than it was designed to anyway.

Civ4 runs perfectly with all graphics values maxed out, including the full load of AA on my new 2.4Ghz core 2 Quad Vista system from Dell. Much better than on my old 1.8 Ghz P4! Only, now some of the audio files sound scratchy. Could be Dell's integrated audio

I am running BtS 3.13 on Vista Enterprise x64 with
no real issues, aside from the fact that BtS begins to
hang for excessive periods late-game. Early game
                            is really snappy and responsive.

This hang has nothign to do with "Waiting for Other
Civilizations" because the hang occurs as soon as
it's my turn again. All the rival civ's complete
their turns relatively quickly. This "Pause" is noticable
when Civ is asking me to build something in a city, or
when a rival AI is trying to talk with me. The hang only
occurs once per turn. And only as soon as it's my turn
again. Never mid turn, or late turn.

I get almost a full minute hang when it becomes
my turn again. The only way I've found to combat
this is to enable "MemSaver" in CivilizationIV.ini.
Which works, but sucks, because I like Alt-Tab.

When I do this, the hang is mostly gone. However,
as soon as I load a saved game, the hang returns. I
can load a game one time, at the very beginning
and all is OK, but after that one load, it'll hang again.

                            I am running:

                            AMD Athlon 64bit Dual-Core 3GHz CPU
                            nVidia 6800 GS 256MB PCI-e (16x) Video Card
                            500GB SATA-300 Seagate HD
                            4GB of DDR2-800 (at 440MHz) Kingston RAM
                            Vista Enterprise Edition 64-bit
                            SoundBlaster Audigy PCI Audio

I hope it's addressed at some point. I'm glad to hear
few others are experiencing it. It's frustrating

I find that most games run better on my computer since I upgraded from XP to Vista, and I'm using an old Athlon64 3500+. So...

Vista is definately a great platform, bugs it comes with or not. I've found that, as a general rule, people who bash the crap out of it haven't used it.

OH! I do strongly recommend Vista32 over Vista64, though. STRONGLY. Vista64 has some serious driver issues that can creep up from time to time. Most have been squashed, but there's still a few around.

                              Me.
