  • Great Generals - what does 'free upgrades' mean?

I've searched around, but I haven't found the answer to this question jumping out at me at all. I got my first Great General in Warlords the other day, and attached it to a unit. I distributed the XP, and I believe the upgrades that the unit I attached to all came from said XP, only the options were extended.

Now the unit I attached the General to still has the General icon in among the upgrade icons, only this one says 'free upgrades'. What does this mean? Does it mean that my unit got A free upgrade along with the XP bonus from when I first attached, and I just missed it? Does the icon just sit there to show you that this is the unit with the GG attached and actually 'free upgrades' means nothing? Does it in fact refer to the free XP I already distributed? Something else? I've so far had this unit promoted once more due to battles and haven't seen any evidence of 'free upgrades'.

It means you can upgrade the general to a more advanced unit without paying money.
Also unlike regular units the general keeps all his experience when upgraded.

If you attach a great general to an axeman, free upgrades means that that particular axeman can be upgraded to a maceman, rifleman, infantry, or any other appropriate unit for free.

Similarily it doesn't cost anything to upgrade a great-general-attached horse archer to a knight, to a cavalry, or to a gunship.

And since they retain all XP, that's how some people get absolutely insane units. Attach an early General to a Chariot, and upgrade him all the way to Gunship in the modern age. With enough warfare and some luck, you can have a crazy 200+ experience unit.

That's right. I had a unit, a machine gun, that was fortified on a hill in enemy territory (wiht others). It was crazy how many upgrades I got for it! I addition, I was charistmatic so with all the possible upgrades, I had to wait for computers so I could upgrade to MG to Mech Inf to open for other useful upgrades for my saved XP. Can't remember the XP, but I think it was around 250.

That's right. Don't confuse upgrades for promotions, they're two different things.

Aha! Thank you everyone, and my problem was well encapsulated in one sentence there, Willem. Thanks. I'd have noticed this when I got to upgrading to Grenadiers with this particular Maceman
