  • Firaxis Got Banana Trees Very Wrong

For the first time since playing Civ IV, I zoomed in to have a look at a banana plant. Having worked on banana plantations in Israel and my home state of Queensland, I was shocked to see utterly inaccurate artwork.

Firaxis would have us believe that a banana plant has a brown, bark covered trunk, pinnate leaf fronds, and multiple hands of fruit growing from various points of the frond.

In actual fact, banana plants are large herbs that don't have bark, they have large, linear leaves, and most importantly, they only grow a single cluster of fruit which is very widely known as a banana bunch.

Yeah, this might seem a ridiculous complaint to make - go and stick a banana where the sun don't shine if you think so, but I would like this error to be recognised.

Since you were playing as the Americans, you should realize that you get special graphics for the American hybrid of the banana plant. It's different if you play as the Aztecs, for instance.

I grew up in the city (in the middle of a desert), all plants look the same to me. They are like some magical thing that puts food on my supermarket shelves.

          god bless refrigeration and transport.

My only complaint is a city of my size can't exist in civ4 because we don't have banana trees outside of it.

Perhaps these bananas are a special CIV species of bananas that exist only in all things CIV.

Or perhaps it is just artistic freedom.

                Or perhaps they screwed up.

                Who knows?

The trunk can look plenty brown, IMO.

Anyway, that tree has it all wrong. Bananas are yellow.

                      Except when they are green.
I've seen them almost that green even in the grocery store!

I don't know about the bananas... but does anyone else notice some funky graphics with silk and spice when you plantation it?

If it is on plains it looks like you are farming dead plants.

Yes... maybe it was silk and incents.

At any rate... these resorces get damn ugly once farmed.
