Hi all,
I had to share this! I amn exhausted and barely hanging in the office, just want to sleep. For the first time ever, I was able to beat AI on Prince and Monarch level.
I almost always beat AI on Noble level, but that's easy as I develop faster. On Prince, there was always 1-3 civlizations that developed faster.
The difference is came when I realized several moments:
1. Chopping wood actually brings hammers, so I can concentrate several workers at initial stages to get myself 1-2 important world wonders or build some settler, barracks, grainary or library.
2. I started to build msany more cottages, and what difference it makes later on!
3. Assigning specialists in cities can be great! And I finally realized how to generate Great Persons
4. I payed more attention to civics, quite important. Slavery let's me sacrifice population for buildings and also eliminates unhappiness.
Once I started to pay attention to all these, I was able to beat AI on Prince twice in a row rather convincingly.
Then I tried Monarch. First two times it was not good enough and I ended up somwhere in the middle scorewise until one of the top civilizations attacked me and I was badly beaten. Then I started even more carefully as British, selected good first two cities with a lot of cottages and libraries, generated two GPs quickly, added two barbarian cities in good locations, got a lot of ivory and started to build a big army. I went on to beat Americans, got all their cities except two tiny ones in bad locations. Of course, I was sooo behind everyone else technologywise. BUT, my finances never went down to minus number when everyone goes on strike and units disappear. In fact I never had to go below 40% research and only for about 10 moves. Once I got more cottages and improvements, several more GP with one Golden Age, I went back to 60% and then 80% research. By the time I got to Railway area, I was just 1-2 technologies behind 3 leading nations, an I had teh largest territory. I was the first to get Infantry and Flight and moved to #2 nation when French attacked in force. With helicopters, artillery and infantry (they only had artillery), I mauled their attacking force, but Napoleon was stubborn and refused to conclude peace. I had to go on for about 20 more moves, actually take one of his cities and get Germans to attack him until he finally agreed to peace. After that I very quickly moved to #1 and build a very solid lead.
I still cannot believe I won space race on Monarch!!! That is huge for me.
