  • How to get rid of second religion?

    Hi,

This is likely a newbie question. How do you get rid of a surplus religion?

I mean, I deliberately went for Buddhism and I got it. Somewhat later in the game I got Christianity too. I used a missionary to spread Buddhism in the "infected" (no disrespect intended -- I just want only one religion) town.

Is there a way for me to make the second religion just go away?

    Thanks in advance!

Nope, once a religion is in a city, it's there to stay. Note that the Theocracy civic will prevent spreading of non-state religion.

However, having an extra religion can't really do any harm. The more religions you have, the better, generally.

I don't think you can get rid of it once it's there.

You can limit the spread of the religion by choosing a different state religion, and the religious civic that prevents the spread of non-state religions (can't recall which that it, at the moment).

I'm not sure there's any harm in having a second religion if you're the one that founded it (different story if someone else did, and they have its shrine). It's actually a benefit under Free Religion.

The only downside to having multiple religions is if you're hoping to have your neighbors convert to your "primary" religion but instead the "secondary" religion spreads better and they switch to that. That can be annoying. But mostly it's a plus to have multiple religions. Extra temples/monasteries/cathedrals can be built, and under Free Religion, you get extra happiness just for having the extra religion in a city.

Then there is this wonderful thing called the double holy city...

Give the city away. Then attack and raze it.

              Then rebuild.

True, but it is the answer...ensure it is done early and quickly so it doesn't spread.

Why would you want to do that? With multiple religions, you can build extra Temples for more happiness and Monasteries for extra beakers, not to mention extra Cathedrals for a significant cultural boost. Having extra religions really comes in handy when you eventually switch to the Free Religion civic, where each one established in a city gives you 1 culture and 1 happiness. The main downfall in having another religion in your cities is that some other civ is making some money from it being there. Unless of course you founded both of them.

The only downside I see to a foreign religion being spread to your cities are that:

                      1. If there was no religion at all previously present, now you have to build missonaries to spread all of your religions to it instead of getting one of them for free.

                      2. If there was some religion present, now it reduces the success of your missonaries spreading your own religions there.

Do you play Everquest 2 Nirn? Because I had a Nirn in the guild there when I was playing it.

There are other downsides to second religions; specifically, that other civs with that as their state religion can presumably see your cities, and that any civ with the relevant great prophet building gains revenue from your converted cities. Generally, however, I think the positive aspects of additional religions outweigh the negative ones - one gold to a potential enemy pales in comparison to +10% science, +1 happiness, and even more culture... and if you have a proper defensive army, it won't matter if your opponents can see your converted cities.

In MP games, seeing into a city is a bigger issue since a human can take advantage of it better. We now have people that try to bait people by keeping obsolete units in those cities and the real defensive force is kept just out side the city to decimate any troops suckered in.
