  • Help - Uninstall a partially loaded game

I got a new super PC... couldn't wait to load Civ IV.

First, I had to load vanila Civ IV.
So I put the first disk in, and it installed, then it asked for the second disk. I put that in, and the install process stalled and wouldn't complete or read the disk. Machine then froze.

So i go to start install again... but the damn machine thinks the game is already installed. I go to the uninstall control panel, and windows doesn't think the game is there, so I can't uninstall it that way. Deleting the current folder won't work, because it still thinks the game is there when I put in the disk.

What the heck can I do. ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
    Keep on Civin'

Try running setup.exe from the 1st cd. It should give you the options to modify, repair, or remove.

It doesn't... sigh... It gives the normal three options as if the game was installed... play, read, cancel. and if I hit play, it says it's missing files... sigh...

A few years ago, I got rid of a program that wouldn't uninstall by doing a web search on uninstall utilities. I recollect there was one that used a sledge hammer, but it got rid of the d**** thing.

Try rolling back to a restore point created before you started the failed CIV install. If you are using WinXP, it's Start > Help and Support > Undo changes to your computer with System Restore.

You'll need to clean the Civ4 registry keys. HKLM\Software\Firaxis Games and HKCU\Software\Firaxis Games. ICQ me if you need help doing that .

thanks for the help Solver... it does look like it's just a disc problem, so hopefully rah can bring over his copy and I should be able to solve the problem.

I hope his disks help. If they don't, I'll probably be back here about 3 hours after this post.

Sounds strange that it should be disc related. Please post again if it was

It wasn't disc related. The first disc seems to load fine, and then it asks for the second disc. I put the disc in, and that's when the problems occur. When I hit ok, nothing happens and the program locks. SIGH....

Seems to me that a registry clean up is needed here (alternatively a complete reinstall of windows :shudder: )

Edit: And then stop using your CIV discs a beer pads
