  • Commerce not taking off...

    Hello again!

After what I learnt from my other threads and more reading here at Apolyton I started a new game as Hatshepsut. I am more the builder type but when frederick started to crowd me out from the West and block my expansion possibilities I declared war on him and took 3 of his cities (Cologne, Munich and Hamburg).

After making peace with him I twice more entered his territory in order to destroy the copper mine he re-built West of Hamburg, in order to keep him down while I was growing the cities I took from him.

I also had to capture a city (Delphi) from Alexander just by the sea to the south that he sneaked in between the then Barbarian city if Bulgar and my city (Memphis). I wanted the clams and the pigs. But we made peace pretty soon afterwards. Since then he crushed the barbarians and now we are neighbours to the south.

During all this I lost control over over how I was planning my empire and now for a long time I find myself with absolutly no commerce to sustain research because so much of has to be converted to gold. I have tried to build as many courthouses I can. I am researching Currency with an eye to build markets which I hope can improve my commerce.

In case someone wishes to have a quick peek at my game I attach the save-game.

    1) My question is: Is it simply my many cities that curb my commerce from taking off, or am I mismanaging my tiles/empire? Should I perhaps designate specialists in my cities?

    2) Also, I don't understand the Economy advisor. Do taxes come from converted commerce?

    3) Thirdly, are jungles detrimental to health even when outside the city radius?

If you feel you have time to sneek a peek at my game I would be very greatful!

    /p

your many cities are curbing your commerce. one of the little tricky ways they wanted to kill ICS

yes. commerce that is gained from tiles is tweaked by your buildings/mods/etc, then again by your science slider

A brief summary of gold/science (let’s ignore the culture bit of the slider)

City commerce = Tile commerce + Trade commerce

Modified by +8 in capital and +50% in a capital of a civ running the Bureaucracy civic

      City science = (Slider% * City commerce + Specialist science + Building science) * (1+ city science modifier%)
      City gold = [(1-Slider%) + City commerce + Specialist gold + Building gold)] * (1+city gold modifier%)

Building science only comes from having built University of Sankore
Building gold comes from Spiral Minaret or Shrines.

On the Economic screen you’ll see the total science and gold in the box on the left.

In the middle box you then see taxes of which the first item should be the same as the gold from the first box. The other items, “Trade income” is the money generated from trading resources for gold. Together this is your total income.

The third box is your outgo. Compare this with your income and you have your net gold per turn
