  • moving the capital & city spacing ?

    Hello,

    1) I presume it is always conditioned by what you have in your capital city, but do you tend to move your capital closer to a position in the center of your empire as the game progresses in order to lower maintenance costs for your empire?

    2) Is there any point in trying to consolidate my empire by leaving as little dead space between my city radiuses as possible, or is that concern always out-weighed by the need to place a city in a good position in its own right (the specialising requirement)?

Everybody is different. Me, I tend to grab good city sites first and backfill later. I think Blake once said "Where room, put city", but sometimes finances don't allow for placing a city that will be an under-producer. Spreading out like I do to grab resources early does come with a financial hit; I pay more in distance-to-capitol maintenance than I would if I kept everything close in.

I rarely move my capitol around. Sometimes I do it when I find myself staring alone on an island, I'll shift it towards the center and then build a Forbidden Palace in the new lands I take later. However, later in the game you can adopt the State Property civic and the capitol position no longer matters.

in this cIV is very different then civ3

in civ3 u put as many cities asap and move the capital to the center of the continent

In cIV expanding too fast will make your empire implode, so i have rather 1 good city then 2 so-so cities.

I never move my capital in cIV

Bureaucracy boosts your capital so sometimes if you have one ultimate city that isn't you capital and happens to be kinda central it can be good to move your palace. This great city can typically build the palace very fast so it's not a huge cost. Plus with the Bureau bonus it will quickly make up for the lost production...

You old capital in the meantime won't get the Bureau bonus but it's usually already pretty well build up and doesn't really need it.

          1. Never move my capital, because my empire expanding from time to time. Also building palace early in the game is costly. Mid game, usually build FP or just wait for State Property.

          2. I tend to put city as close as possible, unless there is a super site or I needed strategic resource badly. If that happens, I will backfill later.
