How do we combat global warming in Civ IV?

I'm doing something I don't usually do right now which is to continue playing way after I've won. I have my culture all over the map and I have everyone using environmentalism.

I'm still having random spots of global warming turning the plot to desert though.

    How do we combat this?

    Cheers.

Recognize what causes global warming in Civ IV:
Nuclear weapon detonations, nuclear plant accidents.

Avoiding the causes is the only way. Though I do not KNOW whether cleaning up fallout promptly has an affect or not, I don't think so.

I've never experenced global warming in Civ IV. I don't build nuclear power plants and I don't build nuclear weapons.

Also recognize that very little of it is in your control, a neighbor could just as easily build a nuclear plant or detonate a nuke.

Also scrubbing the fallout fast or slow has no effect on global warming. It's a rather stupid model Firaxis came up with in that department. I think they should either fix it, so you can reverse the effects or scrap the concept entirely.

After reading a thread in the General forum about building deletion, and then this thread, I was prompted to perform a search to find out what causes a nuclear meltdown. I read several threads, but no one seems to know exactly what causes them. Is it just a random chance per nuclear plant, therefore meaning the more plants you have, the higher the chance of a meltdown? Or is there a specific cause? For instance, I believe in CivII unhappiness could lead to a meltdown.

I think it should be global cooling since nuclear weapons cause nuclear winters.

SandMonkey, I thinkk it is every turn there is x chance of a meltdown.

Whether it was named global warming or nuclear winter, the effects would be the same: tiles becoming unuseable (i.e., desert) across the map.

If it was a nuclear winter wouldn't it cause more tundra?

You can have global warming with no nuclear weapons being used nor nuke plant meltdowns as well. I have seen it happen in cities with lots of pollution creating buildings (coal plants, factories, airports, labs, etc). It is rare but it does happen (maybe once or twice in a epic speed game).

Replacing coal plants with clean power and not having airports and drydocks everywhere would probably help reduce the chances of this.

Never seen it yet either. Didn't know it existed, actually.

You can always mod them out if you want to be sure that the AI doesn't do something stupid.

MasterDave, I would speculate that your no-nukes/plants global warming experience was actually caused by a nuclear plant meltdown that you didn't observe. I have seen AI civs have meltdowns occur to them.

Maybe Firaxis missed this when adjusting epic (& marthaton) games. There might also be more nuke plant meltdowns in epic (& marathons)

I don't think nuclear winter = global cooling.

Nuclear winter = too many nukes makes Earth uninhabitable.
