  • How do I stop sacrificing food overplus to boost production?

Hi all! I'm not a CIV newb but I just started with CIV4 and am being challenged by some very basic things (or so I think!).

My main question is: How do I stop sacrificing food overplus to boost production? My auto-production and auto-citizen allocation are turned off. The way the city behaves now is that I have to halt production for the city to gain in size - why is this?

A second question: How do I make CIV show all production values on each square of the City Map (i.e. not just bread slices (food) but hammers and coins as well).

    I appreciate your help

Depends on what tiles your working.
Each number in a city size will eat 2 food. This is enough to keep them alive but not grow.

When you found a city you get to work 2 tiles. Usually a tile will produce average of about 2 food (indicated by the bread slices). So usually you will have a surplus of 2 food to allow your city to grow.

production is indicated by the hammers. If you set up your city to have at least 1 hammer and more than city population number X 2 slices of bread then your city will both grow and produce at the same time.

The exception is workers and settlers. Both of these halt growth and use bread and production to produce the unit.

      Thanks!

Thanks a lot, that helped. I think this new way to produce settlers and workers is really cool!

The square production info is still bugging me a bit. I have to either click each square on/off to see what that changes, or leave the City View and use the main map to see the square's production values.

It depends on your UI settings. In my city view, I can see the production values for tiles a city has access to work.

Now, keep in mind that no matter how large the cultural boundaries are for your city, you can't have a city directly access tiles beyond 2 tiles beyond your city. If you have cities that are closer, you can click to transfer control from one city to another(from within the city screen).

Oh, okay. Which UI settings should I adjust?
