  • My nice science city.

A OCC city which turned out to be a nice science city, I built Pyramids and GW and HG for engineers, and settled them ALL in my city, then took Representation, and, after I got a few GS, settled them, I had a very very nice science rate in my capital, also, hammer rate was extremely great! Won the space race in 1979, though Asoka was a few part behind. Was ahead in tech almost the entire game-except for the middle of the middle ages, but once I got Bur, I was ahead for the rest of the game.

I believe I got it to a little over 1100, I also then dropped the science rate to 0, and my beaker output was a tad over 500. I also got quite a few artists and engineers after this...

Good result, but a tad short of the record which stands at 2,221.8 IIRC.

Might have been a tad more-if I had more science specialists-most of them- as seen, are engineers. I might have also had more GS if I had run pacifism. I had the civic, but never had a religion.

You had only one city and won???
              And you have bureaucracy enabled?

I once made it over 2,000 but that was with the 3 city radius mod....

Though, that was with 0 cottages (population was up at 59, and I had representation and caste system)

Nicely done - I only recently figured out that great engineers are, most of the time, much better settled than used for popping wonders (with few critical exceptions).

I actually had an OCC game recently where I did something pretty neat I think: I had a Great Engineer/Great Merchant powered city - I settled, I think 7 or 8 great merchants throughout the game, in addition to settling all but one great engineer (the first GE I used to rush pyramids).

With the extra gold, I was able to run pacifism and still have a sizeable army, plus the extra food made my city (that wasn't perfect food-sourcewise) pretty big in the end.

That's the One City Challenge - you can set it up in custom games.

It's quite an interesting challenge; you have only the one city, and can't make settlers, but some restrictions are lifted: you are allowed to make as many national wonders in that one city as you like, when in normal games the limit is two per city.

And bureaucracy is pretty essential for OCC, I think!

The difficulty of the challenge varies greatly with map type and size, and starting location. Essentially, the larger the map, the harder the challenge.

Usually in OCC you aim for a space race victory, though I've once won an OCC diplo victory, and once an OCC conquest victory.... though that was under very special circumstances (I played on a standard highlands map, with raging barbs, and got the great wall early on - after that everyone else but me had trouble with the barbs, offsetting my one-city disadvangate enough to make the conquest possible. Actually, it turned out to be easier than I expected, but fun, nonetheless ).

I prefer OCC conquest. Eventually you have to come out of Pacism, the question is when
I've only done it on small worlds, and I usually throw in a couple of extra civs to slow down their expansion.

That record of Diadems is not an OCC game though. Big difference...but even then, you should be able to get close to 2000bpt in an OCC game, if you drop the difficulty to settler...

But what is the ruse? How you having only one city could win civilizations with 5, 10, 20 or even more cities? Is is impossible!

The removal of the wonder limit in one city is the main thing that makes OCC wins possible. Every good thing is multiplied and multiplied and multiplied.

                              Not impossible - challenging maybe.

The difficulty varies greatly with how much occupiable land there is on the map, and how many opponents you have.

If there's a lot of land, that means that others are going to have larger empires, which makes things very difficult for anyone with just one city - in large land masses then, adding more opponents will make things a little easier; then there aren't likely to be many large empires.

The easiest map settings, by far, that I've tried to play an OCC on are the following:
                              - Standard "Islands" map (Though I guess with a smaller map, it might be even easier)
                              - Number of large islands per player: 1
                              - Sea level: High
                              - Number of tiny islands: None
                              - Resources: Balanced (This is a setting that comes with Warlords, and "balanced" ensures that you'll have all the essential military resouces near by to your starting location.)

On that map, everyone has an island, and civs won't be able to contact each other before they get their first caravels, and won't be able to launch a military land campaign before the discovery of astronomy.

That means that all empires will be fairly small, and you can safely ignore military in the early game, and concentrate on building infrastructure and wonders.

In OCC, the difficulty is in balancing a few things:

First, you need to get to rocketry before others in order to get a head start on the space race. You'll need a head start, because others will have better production capacity with many cities, and towards the end of the game, often have better research rates.

Second, you need to maintain a credible defense, so as not to end up being attacked by everybody, and related to that, you need to manage diplomacy very well - make strong friends, and few enemies. Agree to join wars when your friends ask you, provided that the target isn't much stronger than you or your allies.

In the early game I've found that it's generally wise to agree to give tribute when someone demands it - you'll be somewhat vunerable untill the mid-game or so, when things settle down a little and you'll have time to churn out military forces.

I think playing OCC teaches a lot about the game, in addition to being fun.

I used to think that in OCC, the most important aspect of the starting location would be good commerce: gold, gems, and/or plenty of space to build cottages. And a financial leader.

However, I've found that in OCC, it's probably better to focus on running a specialist based economy: that means that food is most important. A location with great food is much better than a location with great commerce; you'll get much of the research from specialists, running representation.

For that purpose, my favourite leader to use is Peter of Russia: he's philosophical (extra GP generation), and expansive (extra health to allow greater city growth).

If you want to try it out, I think you'll be able to find out many more hints as to how to play OCC in the strategy & education forum.
