Of course, realistically, you want to have the recommended requirements or better. And Civ2 ran like crap on 486.Solver, WePlayCiv Co-Administrator

Civ4 will run away in panic if you even think playing it on 486. It's not even possible to install win2000 on less than pentium processors.
I play on p3/840mhz/512Mb/gf2 which is probably absolute minimum for standard maps - and i've kludged in all possible performance improvements i can think of.

CD-ROM Drive : 4X Speed
Video: DirectX 9.0c-compatible 64 MB video card with Hardware T&L support ( GeForce 2/Radeon 7500 or better)
Sound: DirectX 9.0c-compatible sound card

Actually following the last patch, I got CiV to work on my brothers old PC which runs Windows ME! (All the other components just about made the minimum requirements, though he has 1gig of ram.) It seemed to run ok in single player mode, but it gave up when we tried multiplayer; still it was playable in single player...well for the hour or so he played before we tried multi

I lot of newer notebooks are actually in technical violation of Hardware T&L support, even some that claimed Hardware T&L support, so I'd recommend checking the thread dealing with notebooks if your looking to buy a notebook and play Civ IV on it.
As to my notebook, as long as I keep low graphics, stay on standard size map (or smaller), don't zoom into the atmosphere, keep grid lines off, and don't try the barb scenerio, it works great.1st C3DG Term 7 Science Advisor 1st C3DG Term 8 Domestic Minister
