  • Will Civ4 run on a 486?

I am still back at Civ2. What is the power required for Civ4?

This forum also has a site attached, you know...

Of course, realistically, you want to have the recommended requirements or better. And Civ2 ran like crap on 486.

Civ4 will run away in panic if you even think playing it on 486. It's not even possible to install win2000 on less than pentium processors.

I play on p3/840mhz/512Mb/gf2 which is probably absolute minimum for standard maps - and i've kludged in all possible performance improvements i can think of.

Curious. You can probably buy an old pentium two laptop for less than game and the expansion pack.
        Got my new computer!!!!

P2 laptops - those would be pointless, since civ4 seems to be having it's share of problems even with new laptops. P2's are ancient, too slow anyways and generally did have very crappy 3D graphics.

            Quoted from link:

            "Minimum System Requirements:
            Operating System: Windows® 2000/XP
Processor: 1.2 GHz Intel Pentium 4 or AMD Athlon processor or equivalent
Memory: 256 MB RAM (Windows 2000) / 512 MB RAM (Windows XP)
Hard Disk Space: 1.7 GB Free
            CD-ROM Drive : 4X Speed
Video: DirectX 9.0c-compatible 64 MB video card with Hardware T&L support ( GeForce 2/Radeon 7500 or better)
            Sound: DirectX 9.0c-compatible sound card
            DirectX®: DirectX® version 9.0c (included) or higher"

Actually following the last patch, I got CiV to work on my brothers old PC which runs Windows ME! (All the other components just about made the minimum requirements, though he has 1gig of ram.) It seemed to run ok in single player mode, but it gave up when we tried multiplayer; still it was playable in single player...well for the hour or so he played before we tried multi

I lot of newer notebooks are actually in technical violation of Hardware T&L support, even some that claimed Hardware T&L support, so I'd recommend checking the thread dealing with notebooks if your looking to buy a notebook and play Civ IV on it.

As to my notebook, as long as I keep low graphics, stay on standard size map (or smaller), don't zoom into the atmosphere, keep grid lines off, and don't try the barb scenerio, it works great.

Solver, don't be acting all tough with that PCR talk. You're a young whippersnapper around here. I was on this site when it had branching threads. Now, heel!

He doesn't have a 486 - it is a troll, and a successful one by the looks of it.

Sorry, but in the time spent on Apolyton, I must have developed some sort of spam intolerance disorder. Well, that's better than the hemorrhoidal condition some other members develop .
