Not really. I usually only start this activity up when my empire becomes large (usually when I'm going for a domination victory) and I'm at war. In such cases, the amount of management per turn is already kinda high, so a quick zoom out at the end is no big deal. My computer also can zoom in/out pretty quickly (my old computer couldn't do that very well), so that part doesn't annoy, either.

Rather simple question, but how exactly do you zoom the map out? All I've found is the alt-F4 grid arrangement, and there doesn't seem to be a "view" toolbar anywhere.

        Default is mousewheel.

If you need to know where enemy units are (so you don't miss that sneaker that's heading for your single-warrior-defended city), use your military advisor (F5), select the enemy civ and 'All Units.' Shift-select additional civs if necessary.

Click on mini-map to exit the advisor and go to that location.

Query: What is the use of the health bars?? I have never been able to make sense of them. They don't seem to be proportional to their hitpoints.

I have been using the health bars. I don't get the movement part of the bar though. I haven't figured that out. When it's red, I know it's bad.
