  • unexpected drop of GNP score

I do not fully understand the GNP score calculation. In my GNP score there is a sudden and substantial drop of my GNP which drops me from nr 1 to nr 4 in a very short time.

OK there has been some wars with the other civs on my continent which I could not really win. Although I never lost 1 city and was able to keep a gain of about 3 to 4 cities. When I made peace (around 1800) I focussed on the so called 'new world' that was only inhabited with barbarians and was able to possess about 90% of that landmass.

I won a space victory but saw that I had a drop of almost 40% in GNP that I could recover (I recovered between 1800-1985 only about 20% relative to the other civs that only covered about 10% of the landmass and had less then half of my cities.)

How is that possible? I understand that the GNP per city will be less then the other civs because I have a lot of more upcoming cities but the total number of cities compared with those much smaller civs should compensate the absolute figure of the GNP score.

...or is the the GNP score relative (i.e. average GNP/city?)

I have more satisfaction in having a much more powerfull GNP and some other parameters (like life expectancy) then just by the space victory. I like my victories to be structural

Number of cities does have a huge impact on your GNP, the gain of 3 - 4 cities from conquest followed by further gains of cities in the New Worlds would have been sufficient to have lowered your GNP and kept it from recovering much. Specialist based economies can run near bottom in GNP and still be level pegging on science, so GNP figures are pretty meaningless and can be ignored to some extent.

I think GNP is something like 'raw commerce - total expenses'.

So if you build libraries and marketplaces your GNP doesn't increase, but obviously you get stronger. And specialists do not add to your GNP either. If you expand a lot your GNP can drop sharply because your expenses go up a lot. If you compensate for this by building marketplaces and running specialists, your GNP will stay low.

Don't worry about GNP. It doesn't make sense. I've won games on immortal with a negative GNP

GNP in demographics - your unmodified-by-libraries-and-markets-etc coin output. Includes terrain, trade routes, DOES NOT include specialists or great specialists. Shouldn't include foreign income (I didn't really spend too much time checking everything).

GNP in graph - your modified by buildings science + modified by buildings commerce + foreign income - all expense

        ____________

so, if you did see a drop in GNP graph while you were in war, it is most probably due to large number of unit outside your borders.
All units that are not within your borders and are more numerous than your "free units" specified by civics will decrease your GNP graph.
