  • Are unitsd suppose to revert to 10 XP after being upgraded?

I upgraded an axeman to a maceman. He kept his level but his XP was reset to 10. 10/28. Is this intentional or a bug?

This is intentional, not a bug. Its also a pain in the ass, but its been in CivIV for as long as I can remember. I'm sure there is a justification for the lost points that someone else knows. Just remember, you don't lose the promotions, just the points.

The justification is to make it somewhat harder to have an uber-elite army. Or else, upgrades 17 XP axeman to maceman, then the 28 XP mace to Greandier, etc.

        It is intentional.

Just check the XP before upgrading. If less than 10 no problem. If above 10, you need to consider - is it best to upgrade (for a stronger unit you need now) or can you wait till you get to the next promotion level.

Myself - if I am only a few (it depends on the level) XP away - I wait. Unless I think I may lose a vital City/Resource etc.

        Edit:

Thanks. That's some info they might want to add to the online help. I didn't see anything there so I came here. Maybe it's in the manual, but that's a lot to look through. Thanks again for the quick help.

I do not understand - can you explain please? I do play Warlords, so I am confused by this comment.

Not the Warlords expansion, but units which are led by a Warlord .

Ok - I now understand - slight brain dead moment.

Warlords units do not revert back to 10 XP when upgraded.

Indeed, that's one of the main advantages of the warlord unit.

If you get to keep the Promos, what's the disadvantage to being reset to 10? It seems to me that would make the next promos easier to get (sooner).

You keep the promos, but when you are reset to 10, you are still required to meet the XP for the next promo. For example, if you have an Axeman with 19 XP and therefore 4 promos and then upgrade to Maceman, the Maceman will have 10 XP and 4 promos. That means he needs to get another [edit] 16 [/edit] XP to get the next promo. I hope that is a clear explanation.

The unit's experience is set to 10 but the level of experience required to get to the next level stays the same as it was before the upgrade.

If you have a unit which was on 25 experience and needed an extra 1 point to get to 26 for a promotion, when you upgrade it will return to 10 and so you'll need 16 points before promotion. The higher the level of the unit the more this hurts as you will then need to win large numbers of battles before you can promote again.

Well, since upgrades are expensive and more likely to be done en masse by the AI. I have no problem with this.

In addition to this, I remember reading somewhere that, logic-wise, the reduction in experience points were also meant to reflect the inevitable unfamiliarity that comes with a new set of weapons, armour etc and associated different tactics when upgraded.
