What do resources that give slice of bread do?

So I've hooked up rice via road network and it shows up in all the cities as +1 bread + 1 health.
I have seen the effects of +1 health on cities, but I've never seen the effect of +1 bread.
If I count up all the bread being produced its equal to the amount taken from the land. I thought there would be 1 extra in each city thats hooked up to my rice.
Where does it go?

The +1 slice of bread is added to the tile's food production.
You get it only to that city that has the resource tile within it's "fat cross"

Only smilies and health affect the whole trade network in your empire.
