I'm finding a similar type of expansion on Emperor to be crippling on the cost side. Nearly reached 500 BC and still haven't even got Writing from my 10-20% research rate.

Will take a bit of catching up although those nice Aztecs were good enough to finish the Pyramids for me when my army - 6 Axes, 1 Spear and 1 Chariot - was on their border.
