      It doesn't mean that.

I think the chance of retreating applies if you are about to lose. In other words, it's 12% of the remaining 20% - ie 2.4% of the original odds.

I'd imagine the percentages have no effect on eachother. You have 80% chance of winning. If you lose, you have 12% chance of running. Certainly the overall chance of survival is better, but you can't in any way calculate that number.

Unit has a natural 20% chance of withdrawal. Unit has a 50% chance of winning a particular battle and 50% chance of losing it. 20% of that 50 is a 10% chance of withdrawing from the battle so that the odds of surviving are 60%.

So that Solver and Rjmatsleepers are both correct - it seemed to me that in Solver's example 12% was a result of a 60% withdrawal chance applied to a 20% chance of defeat (hint: no unit has a general 12% withdrawal chance).

Yeah... attack a Warrior with a Cavalry, and your retreat chance will show up as 0.1% - because the chances of victory are 99.9%. Attack an Infantry with a Catapult, and chances of retreat will show as 25% because the chance of winning is 0%.

Your Charlamagne has 7 promotions less as my Subutai. That's a lot of promotions And you'll never get them either, because it's already a gunship while you miss the medic promotions.

Those medic promotions are wicked, combined with March. It heals at least 40% damage per turn, even in enemy land, even when moving and attacking. Combined with commando and 5 movement that's a hell of a unit.

Yup. Thedrin is right in his clarification though I think.
