  • Default Player Name

    In single player and LAN multiplayer mode, the game names you after your computer user/profile name.
    Has anyone found a way to change the default for your player name?
    Another question: Is there a way to make the game 'remember' your custom game preferences? I like to play with permanent alliances turned on, and it would be nice if there were a way to have it checked by default so I don't have to remember to do it before starting...
    I apologize in advance if these questions have been answered elsewhere.

    IIRC, the name is in the CivilizationIV.ini file and can be changed very easily (using notepad for example). The .ini file is in My Documents\My Games\Sid Meier's Civilization IV

      It would be really nice if it remembered what you changed it to last time, like it now does with pretty much all the other settings on the custom game.

        I'm fairly sure all of this is in the INI file; however, whether some of it is obvious or not I'm not sure. There's one line that is "GameOptions", you might see what putting something there (probably a series of 0 or 1 s) would do ... It's also possible the XML file Civ4GameOptionsInfo would allow you to change this (in fact, it should be possible this way); not sure if it would count as modified assets or not, test it out and see (you can always change it back to a 0 from a 1 if it does)... back up your files though (and back them up somewhere not in the \Civ4\Assets\ folder, as inside that folder changes can cause it to be marked as 'modified' ... use a backup folder on your desktop or somesuch)

        It's possible that the INI entry "GameOptions" would follow the same pattern as the Civ4GameOptionsInfo, in terms of its order. So something like "GameOptions=001001100101101010" would set the third, sixth, seventh, tenth, twelfth, thirteenth, fifteenth, and seventeenth options to "yes" (or non-"no") by default ...

          In fact I tested it, and the INI option is correct.

          ; Game Options
          GameOptions = 000000001000000000

          That line inserted instead of your ;Game Options line in your INI (just do a search) will set Permanent Alliances as "on". It seems to be in the order of the XML file.
