  • a question if you please

i don't know if you guys are search nazis but know that i did search before posting this.

i am new to civ 4 but old to civ 3

i was playing a game tonight and it suddenly crashed. I thought, "it's allright i'll just load the autosave like in civ 3". But i can't find the autosave.

during a search on google i read that shift+f8 loads an autosave and i tried this but nothing happened.

how do you load an autosave?

Unless you have changed the standard settings in the config file it will save every 4 turns. To access the save, click on load game, then click on small '+' next to the saves for type of game you were playing, sp, hotseat, mp etc, this will provide access to subdirectory of autosaves, click on the save you want, they are listed by year of turn.

You have to actually be in the game to use the Shift F8. I know that sounds obvious, but I used to work in tech support, so I know that the obvious is still worth mentioning.

Also, the Shift F8 does not load the Autosave. CivIV saves the game on its own every 4 turns and keeps 4 previous saves (configurable in the .ini file). Alt F8 loads the "Quicksave".

You can Quicksave by pressing Shift F5 (be careful you don't hit Alt F4 like I do sometimes...). If you never did the Shift F5, then Shift F8 will do nothing.

It's just a faster way of doing the Alt S, then hit Enter on whatever name Civ gave you in Civ III since Firaxis knows that a lot of us like to do a quick save immediately before we pop a goodie hut or enter a battle.

If you did not do Shift F5 Quicksave, then you can do the old fashioned Alt L And load the Autosave. Just look in the My Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4\Saves\single\auto folder for the autosaves. (or whereever you told it to save for your computer if you changed it).

The game only keeps autosaves for one game. If you start a new game, all old autosaves are deleted. If you load an earlier save in your game, all autosaves that are no 'in the future' are deleted as well. The game keeps only the last 5 or so autosaves, but in addition it also keeps and autosave made at turn one.

So autosaves are always of the game you are currently playing. Quicksaves can be of an entirely different game. So don't accidently press quick-load and find yourself suddenly with an entirely different civ
