  • Three things that were new to me

    1. Circumnavigating the world without building a naval unit.

Unless this was a bug, presume I managed to swap maps with enough different civs that I could "see" the whole world, without actually travelling there. It seems a bit odd, but it happened.

    2. Building a university without discovering alphabet.

The tech tree allows this. Presumably it's based on non-alphabetic writing - Chinese? Another contribution to the game vs reality debate.

    3. Global warming without a nuclear war.

I presume someone, somewhere had used a nuke, but why did global warming hit my territory? Can something else cause it?

    3. Global warming can affect any tile in the world regardless of nuclear activity. It can also be set off by a nuclear plant experiencing a melt down, not just use of a nuclear weapon.

      2. Universitys transfer knowledge, there's no need of an alphabet to do that. Sure, makes it easier, but there's still no need for an alphabet.

I managed to circumnavigate the world without building a naval unit again. I'm now pretty sure this must be a bug. I recently made some changes to the XML, but for the moment I can't understand why it should cause this bug.

          1. Circumnavigating the world without building a naval unit.

This is not a bug, circumnavigating the world is achieved when you have revealed tiles that circumnavigate the globe. How you reveal the tiles is not a factor. The most common way to to this is by trading for maps.

The endpoints of your circumnavigation don't even have to meet. As long as you have covered all the longitudinals, you have it made. One 'end' of your exploration could be in the northern hemisphere, and the other in the southern.

I had hoped it would be fixed in a patch or Warlords, but it was not to be (yet).

and nuclear war shouldn't cause global warming anyways.

Everyone complains about nuclear warfare causing global warming. A nuc-war-induced ice age would result in land having the same characteristics (ie, useless). I don't see the problem.

Well in the real world nukes cause Global Dimming, not Global Warming. In fact a serieus nuclear war would be a far more effective method of stopping Global Warming than Kyoto ever will be.

Nukes do have some other disadvantages though.

hmm, this gives me an idea to fix global cooling.

All the nuclear powers launch their nukes at some uninhabited part of the world- say Australia. This causes a huge dust cloud to encircle the earth causing a nuclear winter.

Though I have read some articles that said nuclear winter would not be a severe as first theorized. And I would think it would only last 1 or 2 years. Once the dust settles, we'd resume with global warming.
