I don't agree. While the sea resource might be good in itself, the tiles around it are going to be mediocre. You're always going to be better off having more land tiles. Quite often I'll refuse a start simple because I'm right on the coast, and half of my tiles are in the water. That's just not good enough for me, unless there's uber resouces in the water.

I have a large map that I am in the Renaissance on, and I am slowdowns and starting to get hangs or crashes every few turns. I am very happy with how this game is progressing, and I would hate to just dump it and start again.
I have played large maps before without problems. Does the new AI require more memory than before? Is there any way the new AI would affect video card usage (the weak link in my system)?
I will switch off the new AI and try to continue and see if that makes a difference. Thanks.
Have you upgraded your video drivers lately by any chance? I was having a problem when I went from ATI 6.7 to 6.9. I was getting bad lag and slowdowns late in the game, and using my grid would crash my system. When I rolled back to 6.7 though, those problems went away. Someone else was having a similar problem with a NVidia card, and he also cleared it up by rolling back.
Blake: I saw some strange behavior with the December 7 version. Standard size highlands, mountains and lakes random. At the start, the blue circle was telling me to move north, so I followed its orders:
The scout moved to the hut that the settler revealed, and popped a map, showing another sheep to the north. Next turn, the blue circle moved to a nice spot using both sheep.
A couple turns later, my scout revealed all of the starting terrain. Pretty grim.
I'd say the blue circle code was right to tell me to move off the orginal start, but why did it pick the hill instead of the tundra (which it picked on the next turn).

Nope. No such change. I installed the Better AI, and this is the first game I have played on it. It could just be a system problem; I will try it without the Better AI and see if I can continue. Otherwise, I will have to dump the game and try another one. That would be too bad, as this is my first time playing Korea and it is going quite well.

Because before your scout revealed the map, it didn't "know" about the 2nd sheep. Once it "knew", it correctly picked the best spot.
I've always understood that the city placement blue circle code can see into the black, and that expert players use that fact to guess at resource locations (like at my original start position).
If that's changed, it would be a big deal.

For a start, I'm inclined to say that you shouldn't trust the blue circles on the first turn... they might be a bit messed up. If nothing else they have very little information to work on. Founding in-place isn't a bad idea.
However the idea of moving onto the plains hill was right - that site bringing in grassland and another lake tile, as well as the +1h on the city site plus hill defensive bonus, well worth it. And it was right to next suggest the tundra.
Highlands doesn't use the full normalizer, that's one of the charms of the map. You get crap sometimes.

Using the latest build, I get a CTD at 780 AD when pressing 'end turn'. Save is attached.
(Notre Dame was built by an AI civ in this turn. Beside that, nothing special happened.)
You have the same problem I described above. If you use this DLL, which is the same as Blakes with one line changed, you should be able to continue your game.
- crash fixed related to AI_stealPlots (caused with cities of different civs sharing a fat cross)
- fixed Emancipation bug, AIs will once again use Emancipation
- starting location tweaks, the 'greenland effect' toned down (ie Furs wont be upgraded to Grassland)

Build Dec 9th - my starting position is 3 (!) tiles away from an AI start. Maybe not a bug, but I haven't seen such a cramped start before.
I have, several times in the default game. I posted a thread here about it awhile ago, and other people were seeing the same thing. It happens sometimes I guess.
