Real men play in windowed mode. And use Celsius. And don't use Opera.

One could argue that a true Civ fan plays in full screen mode to more fully immerse himself in the game.

I've seen that error before, but I can't remember why or how I fixed it.
        • Double check video settings (ie. make sure you're not trying to force a resolution or refresh rate that it can't run)
        • Try clearing your cache
        • Reinstall DirectX from the Civ4 CD/DVD. They've included a different version than the one you can download

Don't know why? That's easy. The s.o.b. won't work. That's not the question.

Ok, my problem is I'm running an Abacus pc.
Not enough horsepower for Civ 4.

Didn't Civ4 need at least 1024 x 768? That's also what the error message says.

                    Yes it does

You're half right, Sloww. Aside from your graphics, you could likely run the game acceptably at minimum settings (you'd probably be limited to Standard maps at most and pretty much all the "extras" would have to be turned off).

The main issue is that your graphics controller doesn't support T&L. I have heard of workarounds using various pieces of software, but even if that would allow Civ to run, it would slow to a crawl and probably would not be playable.

                      I tried adjusting screen resolution.

What I figure is I'm trying to pull the Budweiser Beer wagon with Shetland ponies.

You'd need a new graphics card. With that one, Civ4 simply won't run. And the 1.0 GHz processor means that you'd probably not want to run anything larger than a Standard map, and even those might give you slow turns. 1.2 GHz is the official minimum requirement, it would run at 1.0 if you had a graphics card, though...

Since the machine shows 510 megs of memory, the BIOS is set to provide only 2 megs of memory to the video, in addition to Intel video being garbage. You can try to boost the memory given to video from 2 megs and move it up to 64 or 128 megs, but keep in mind that it reduces the memory available to the main game and other applications.
