Ever gained a city through 'Trade'?

Well, everytime I invade and demolish a Civ I try and give them an option to give me a weak city and in return I won't smash their entire Civ into tiny pieces..for another 10 turns.

But never have I been able to get a city that way. Nor have I been able to get it rhough normal trade - no matter how much they adore me.

So, I was wondering; have any of you ever managed to get a city through trade? Or is necessary to bring your tanks every time? :P

In Civ III I could get up to 3 cities from peace treaties, but I never can get cities. Not even from the last civ on the continent to fall to my army.

Heck they won't even give techs for peace.

Today after completely eradicating Huanya's army I asked fusion for peace, just for the heck of it. He was just 2 pieces away from a SS victory, so accepting would have almost guaranteed him a victory. He refused. Weirdness.

I have rarely manged to get cities for peace. The first way is to let them capture one of your cities, and then without retaking it, take bunch of other cities. The AI will cry uncle and give your city back. Obviously this isn't exactly a great strategy, but it does work.

The second way is if the country built a rubbish tundra city or some other isolated city which is under pressure from your empire. I have occasionally managed to get some pretty bad cities that probably would have culture-flopped to me eventually anyway.

Basically though if the AI thinks that the city in question is in any way a part of its core empire, it won't trade it. And any time you're really pounding an AI they've probably been reduced to their core so no city trading.

It's wierd.. I just wanted to spare my poor soliders lives.. Good thing I got nukes to help me with that.

England pissed me off and I just happened tio have 3 nukes for every city they had. Didnt loose a single soldier. Did make a lot of enemies tho :P

I've bullied island cities out of AI's in exchange for peace a few times.

I bullied a city out of a Deity AI once. It was one of my cities which I founded on his continent, then we started a war and he took my city on his continent, but I took all of his cities on my continent. When it came time for peace he gave my city back to me.
