Because a 2nd shrine is useful only for the income, and income beyond about 20gpt is pretty hard to use. Even with a single shrine you naturally end up with 60+

Upkeep goes up by having more world wrap? How is that, don't distances become shorter, on average?
It's a coded penalty... because distances are shorter distance upkeep is doubled. It might balance out for world-spanning empires, but it inevitably ends up with much higher upkeeps for smaller empires.

I never play islands. Emperor/standard/pangaea is doable.

Apologies for the defection to another site but here's my guide: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=185305

I also have a diplomacy guide in the works.

            Hi Diadem,

I have been preoccuppied lately with Dominions, which is the most challenging and enjoyable game I've found so far for Multiplayer PBEM. The latest version, Dominions 3, was recently released, so I'm immersed in that game.

I took time to look at Uberfish's guide, and enjoyed reading it very much. I very much agree that Deity OCC is not really winnable consistently. One deity win for me on one non-island map required an excellent start, plus a lot of luck. Even with much easier islands maps, close calls or annihilation were the usual deity results!

I have not even bought Warlords yet, due to my interest in Dominions, so must admit my thread and much that is in it is probably a bit dated by now, whereas Uberfish's guide is more up- to-date.

As for non-OCC space race games, it looked like all the participants in the contest organized by rjmatsleepers lost interest, since the final game in his thread was never finished. Too bad, as that was a very enjoyable way to play Civ IV.

I've recently been experimenting with conquest OCC games. In fact I'm thinking about writing a guide on it. I think "Genocide fun with Gandhi" would be an appropriate name

I think such an approach might even be winnable on deity with the right settings. Of course it becomes almost trivial if you just deselect all victory options but conquest, since the AI just can't handle that, but that feels too much like cheating

You don't need a techlead. You just need to survive, and you need to have modern weaponry before the first AI finishes its spaceship. That should be possible.

Warlords will help here. With a few Great Generals in your city you should be able to produce tanks superior military. City Raider III and Barrage II / III tanks are a sight to behold
