  • Ships fighting land units in cities?

Think I saw something weird the other night. My (Malinese) battleship came across a zulu destroyer escorted transport, sank the destroyer and caused collateral damage to the transport. My other ships were too far off to finish off the transport that turn but they closed in to get it the next turn. The transport goes and hides in a carthaginian city (presumably trying to repair) and I send another battleship to attack it, but instead it fought the cavalry that the transport was carrying (cavalry gave the battleship quite a kicking before finally dying too).

Has anyone else seen something like this or am I going mad? Is it expected behaviour?

Yeah, it's a kooky feature at the intersection of Open Border agreements, 'best attacker vs best defender' stacking, and having multiple civ's units in one square.

Effectively cities are both "land" and "water" squares. While there are prohibitions against your ships entering enemy cities to attack the units there, you *can* enter friendly cities. If there is an enemy in that city, you then attack it. If there is a stack of enemies, such as a transport with a land unit, the land unit will probably be the "better defender".

Interestingly, you can also place your air units in friendly cities during war time to attack enemies or their territory -- just be sure to guard them, or the enemy can send a single unit out to 'attack' the city and capture the ait units.

I once sent a plane to a neutral city and lost it the very next turn...
