  • Can you beat Deity without any warmongering?

Hello people, i have never posted here before, although i have been playing civ for a while now.

Recently i have been trying to beat Deity, without attacking the AI in the beginning of the game, when they havn't yet had the opportunity to take advantage of their great science output. In this last game, it all began very well. I had chosen to play against three AI's on a Dual/Islands map. I managed to build The Oracle and The Hanging Gardens, also i founded 2 religions. The wonders and the religions were all in the same city (so i could get great people faster). At the time where i discovered the Alphabet i was able to trade myself to a point where i wasn't behind tech wise. My plan was to generate two prophets and spread my religions to all the other cities on the very small planet. I thought i was doing good, but made the mistake of converting to one of my own religions, so that no one wanted to have open borders. Also my second great person was an engineer and of cause in time i will be well behind in tech for sure.

Any way, i am pretty frustrated right now and before i try again, i want to make sure that it is in fact possible to win without being aggressive. And if yes what strat do you use?

I've only ever used Diety for co-op games where teh sole target is to lay the smackdown on the AI by the humans.

It's not that exciting but me and a couple of friends play it occasionally.

In Deity, my impression is that if you don't go after them, they will come after you -- with superior weaponry. Suspect the answer to peaceful win is no, although frankly, I have never come close to winning at that level. I played it a couple of times for the laughs -- I try, I die; usually pre-AD.

That raises a complementary question: Which is the highest level that can be won playing peacefully? Emperor?

Elite players have beaten Emp peacefully (non-aggressively). Monarch is do-able for experienced mere mortals but it is not easy. Prince is fairly comfortable to win peacefully every time for a seasoned player.

I wish there was a level between Prince & Monarch, personally.

Of course, with heavy map-rigging all kinds of things are possible.

I bet I couldn't even beat Settler peacefully. I can't help building Praets, and once I have an army of them, the temptation is too much for me

Play as the Indians. It's hard to build Praets (or any other unique military unit) with Asoka/Gandhi.

Isn't there an option to prevent war? Try ticking that.

Some players lean on the damn Praets too heavily, IMO. What's the fun in contually smacking the planet about with the most superior unit in the box?

I've never actually played as any of the Romans. Random leader should get me one of them eventually I guess.

Just because it is not fun for you does not mean it is not fun for others, nor does it give you the right to mock people who play the game for other purposes.

Some people play it for the challenge. Some people play it just for fun. Many people do both. All people should figure this out sooner or later, but I am not betting on sooner. It seems to be much more rewarding to mock someone than understand them.

To reverse your question and get back to the original topic of playing at Deity: What's the fun of playing a game that will beat you overwhelmingly every time? That is where I am with Deity, whether playing peaceful or not.

Good luck to all players at that level, I can only look on in awe. (and occasionally learn something, too!)
                              If you aren't confused,
                              You don't understand.
