Game freezes and sound loops forever!!!

Wtf... I haven't been able to play Civ 4 lately because of this. First it happened in the start menu while I was looking through civilizations. I was checking out their traits and starting techs when the screen froze, the mouse stopped responding, and the music started looping (about .2 seconds like a studder)...

I had no choice but to hard reboot. Then it happened again while I was playing the game, for no apparent reason.

This has only just started to happen. What's going on here?

I have a Soundblaster Audigy LS with the latest drivers, and an NVIDIA GeForce 6600 with the latest drivers... 1 gig of ram... windows xp home edition... etc.

I assume that you where able to play without crashes in the beginning - right?

so, something must have changed... or do you play different scenarios now?

I could locate my problem by disabling sound in the ini - maybe try that...
